Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Leif Carroll! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tony Martinez! The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Hugh Johnson and Bruno Hogan.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A punch combination from Martinez misses. Martinez shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Martinez tries for a takedown but Carroll circles away easily and Carroll counters with a nice double leg into guard. Carroll with a flurry of punches that miss. Martinez wants to get back to his feet but Carroll is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Carroll gets to his feet - Martinez follows without any prompting. Martinez's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Martinez duly obliges. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Good shot there by Martinez.
It looks like Leif Carroll has been cut. Martinez lands a nice looking body shot.
Tony Martinez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Carroll scores with a leg kick.
Nice sprawl there from Carroll as Martinez shoots in. Leif Carroll has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tony Martinez. Martinez moves away from the strike by Carroll.
That's one minute gone in the round. Martinez changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Martinez fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Carroll sprawls well initially but Martinez persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Carroll desperately trying to maintain half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Martinez wants to stand up but Carroll manages to regain full guard. Carroll is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Carroll is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Martinez has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Carroll is proving hard to escape from. Carroll tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Martinez gets the takedown into side control. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Carroll holding on. Carroll can't do much from the bottom here. Martinez tries to stand but Carroll is controlling his head. Martinez tries to get to his feet but Carroll is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Martinez in his guard. Martinez tries to stand but Carroll is controlling from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Carroll lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Martinez! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Carroll landing strikes, looking to finish! Carroll punishing his opponent with strikes. Carroll breaks from Martinez's wrist control and lands an elbow. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Martinez can do anything to dispel that myth. Carroll won't let Martinez get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now. Carroll raining down hammerfists from mount. Carroll wants to control the pace but Martinez is squirming around nicely. Carroll has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Martinez is trying to get back to his feet but can't. Carroll lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Martinez taking shots to the head. Martinez trying desperately to get to his feet.
Carroll landing strikes, looking to finish! We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Martinez tries to buck Carroll off so he can stand up but Carroll has got his back now - this could be big trouble! He's slapped on a rear naked choke that looks really tight! Martinez falls backwards, slamming Carroll to the mat but Carroll holds on tight! Martinez is forced to tap and this one is all over!
