And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Juan Velasquez!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Lou da Vinci and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Waitzel throws a body kick that digs right into the meat.
Velasquez uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Waitzel.
Shane Waitzel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Waitzel ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Velasquez moves away.
Waitzel avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Waitzel seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
Waitzel turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Waitzel lands a leg kick that knocks Velasquez off balance momentarily.
Velasquez misses with a body shot.
Velasquez swats away the attempt to clinch by Waitzel.
Nice defenses there by Velasquez.
Velasquez moves out of range of the body kick.
Waitzel scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Waitzel.
Velasquez fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Waitzel on the side of the head.
Velasquez clobbers Waitzel with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Waitzel misses with an attempted mid kick.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Decent striking displayed by Waitzel there.


It looks like Juan Velasquez has been cut.
That kick from Velasquez tenderised Waitzel's leg. Waitzel is trying to keep his angry face on.
Waitzel keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Velasquez takes a swing at Waitzel's ribcage but misses.
Good leg kick by Velasquez there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Velasquez tries to clinch but Waitzel is having none of it.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Waitzel.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Velasquez avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Waitzel lands with a cross.
Waitzel fakes the leg kick and cracks Velasquez in the body.
Good standup being displayed there by Velasquez as he connects with a hook.
Waitzel slips a straight right by Velasquez.
Velasquez lands a leg kick that knocks Waitzel off balance momentarily.

Velasquez misses with a low kick.
Waitzel connects with a nice looking jab.
Waitzel tries to score with a low kick but Velasquez moves his leg out of the way.
We've been informed that Velasquez has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
Waitzel misses with the body kick
and Velasquez counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.


It looks like Shane Waitzel has been cut.
Velasquez uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Waitzel.
Velasquez ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Velasquez lands a big right hand that sends Waitzel crashing to the mat! Velasquez stays standing though and waves Waitzel back to his feet!


Waitzel is rocked!
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Waitzel crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Velasquez - the referee stops the clock and Waitzel gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Velasquez. Waitzel manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Oh Waitzel is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Waitzel is breathing heavily.
Velasquez fakes the leg kick and throws a superman punch. It's knocked Waitzel out cold! Brutal finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:42 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Superman Punch). Juan Velasquez!
Juan Velasquez is the new heavyweight champion!
Juan Velasquez thanked the fans post fight for their support.
