PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Erin Padilla (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cain Velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Velasquez has chosen dos santos vs velasquez as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Cain Velasquez!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, John Kavanagh and Jonathan Paton.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Padilla tries to clinch up but Velasquez circles away and keeps his distance.
Padilla shoots and misses

and Velasquez counters with a shoot takedown. Padilla fights it but they end up in guard.
Velasquez sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Velasquez wants to control from the top but Padilla keeps moving.

Padilla could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Padilla controls Velasquez momentarily but Velasquez frees himself.
Velasquez would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Padilla wants to control the position but Velasquez says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Velasquez is nestled in close to Padilla, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Velasquez is taking a breather. Padilla says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Velasquez seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Velasquez is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Padilla's half guard.

Still in half guard, Velasquez seems content to control.
Let's hope that Velasquez has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

and Velasquez counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
And that�s the end of the round � the fighters go back to their corners.

Velasquez throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.

Padilla takes the fight into the clinch.

Velasquez escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Velasquez changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Padilla looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Padilla is trying to control Velasquez's posture but Velasquez avoids it.
Padilla gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Velasquez avoids the attempt from Padilla to control.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Velasquez. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Velasquez prevents Padilla from getting the reversal.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Velasquez cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
This has been an exciting period of action!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Velasquez is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Padilla can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Cain Velasquez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Padilla wants to get up but he can't break Velasquez's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Padilla won't allow Velasquez to get back to his feet.

Velasquez escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Padilla gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Velasquez wants to get back to his feet but Padilla is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Velasquez has managed to clinch.

Velasquez pulls guard effortlessly.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Velasquez can do anything to dispel that myth.

Padilla closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Padilla wants to stand but Velasquez has his arm trapped.
Velasquez gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Velasquez desperately trying to maintain half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Velasquez is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Padilla's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Padilla's back!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Erin Padilla.
Well Velasquez has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
