PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Lil Jon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Massa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lil Jon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mike Massa!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Massa scores with a jab.
Jon fails with a takedown attempt.
Massa stuffs the takedown.
We've been hearing reports that Jon has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Massa is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Jon.
Jon looks for a takedown but Massa sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lil Jon. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jon uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Massa.
Jon keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Massa.
Massa looks to land a right hand but Jon moved out of range.

Massa displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Jon.
Jon tries to move into range but Massa moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Massa lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Massa is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Massa sizes up Jon with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Jon doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Massa counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

Jon scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Massa parries the strikes from Jon easily there. Jon is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Massa to escape.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Massa is looking for a sweep.
Massa really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jon. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Massa wants to control but Jon postures up.
Massa avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Jon.

Massa tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Jon wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Jon is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Massa has escaped the position, nice work there.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Jon misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Massa is not content to let Jon control the position.

Massa can't do much from the bottom here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Jon working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Massa parries the strikes from Jon easily there. Jon is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Massa to escape.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Jon is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Massa is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Massa is looking for a sweep.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Jon is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Massa is trying to escape and Jon transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Massa is forced to tap! Nice work there by Jon! Very nice indeed!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:25 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Lil Jon!
After winning the bout, Lil Jon thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
