PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ola John (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cranky Mark (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Ola John!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Cranky Mark!
The judges for this bout are Aafke Stam, Patrick Alders and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
John throws a quick inside leg kick.
A head kick misses from Mark.
A low kick from Mark is predictable there

and John counters with a shoot takedown. Mark fights it but they end up in guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as John accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
John scoring with punches to the head and body.
John pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mark is keeping the position for now.
John is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Mark is trying to control the position but John postures up.
John trying to control but Mark is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
John won't allow Mark to sweep him here.
Mark controls John momentarily but John frees himself.
John throws an elbow that misses. Mark uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in John's guard. Nice move by Mark!

John is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
John can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Mark controls the pace.

John escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mark gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Mark must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Mark is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Mark trying to control but John is working from the bottom.
John wants to sweep but no luck.
Mark trying to control the position from guard on top but John is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mark might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control John haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
John wants to sweep here but Mark controlling him for the moment.
John has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Mark trying to control the position from guard on top but John is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Mark pulls out of a head kick attempt.
John throws a low kick, looking for Mark's leg but Mark calmly moves out of range.
Nice uppercut there from John.
John explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Cranky Mark seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mark moves out of range of the body kick.
A left lands for John.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mark throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
John goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
A jab lands there for John.
A low kick from Mark is predictable there

and John counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Mark trying to control the position.

John missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
John engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Mark seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
John wants to pass the guard but Mark is keeping the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
John tries to close the distance and clinch up but Mark swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Mark fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but John is out of range.
Mark showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from John.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Mark throws a nice inside leg kick.
Mark connects with an inside leg kick.
John dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Mark. That did some damage!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ola John dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Mark lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Mark misses with a head kick.
John walks forward, straight into a front kick from Mark.
Ola John is winning the standup battle so far.
John throws a sloppy head kick and Mark moves out of range easily.
The fight stays on the outside here - John looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
A bone on bone clash there as John blocks the leg kick.
A clash of legs there as John blocks the low kick.
John throws a head kick but Mark moves out of range.
John fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Mark is out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from John.
John tries to clinch but Mark moves out of range.
John lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Mark misses with a low kick.

Mark misses with a head kick.
Mark throws an uppercut from half a mile away. John sees it coming and avoids it easily.
John throws a head kick that half lands.
Mark misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
John looks for the body kick but Mark saw that one coming.
John connects with a solid leg kick.
Mark throws a leg kick but John sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Mark blocks a head kick by John.
John takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.

John closes the distance and clinches.

Mark breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
John is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Mark can do to turn this around?
Mark takes a head kick and keeps coming.


It looks like Cranky Mark has been cut.
John uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Mark.
Cranky Mark is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Mark throws a front kick aimed at John's knee but John avoids it well.

Mark throws a head kick that misses.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Mark throws a low kick but it's checked well by John.
John chopping away at his opponent's legs.
The fighters circling - John throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
An inside leg kick from Mark misses.
That kick from Mark tenderised John's leg. John is trying to keep his angry face on.
A head kick misses from Mark.
Mark takes a kick to the side of the head.
Mark avoids the head kick by John.
Mark throws a body kick that misses

so John counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
John with a flurry of punches that miss.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mark tries to land a sweep but no joy.
John trying to control the position from guard on top but Mark is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Mark trying to keep a closed guard but John is proving a slippery customer.
John wants to control from the top but Mark keeps moving.
John preventing the sweep.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
John trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Mark manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

John is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Mark landing some decent shots from guard.
John is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Mark moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
John is looking to work some ground and pound but Mark has wrist control.
Mark has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
John stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mark swivels though and keeps the full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ola John will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Cranky Mark's cut.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


John looks for a takedown but Mark sprawls well.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Mark.
Mark swats away the attempt to clinch by John.
Mark leaves John with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
John ducks under a wild hook from Mark.
John avoids the head kick by Mark.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
John tries a head kick but it misses.
A low kick from Mark misses

and John counters with a nice double leg into side control. Mark won't be happy with that.
Mark is looking for a sweep.
Mark on the wrong end of some ground and pound.

Mark wants to control but John postures up.

John swings around for an armbar but Mark sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into John's guard.
John keeping moving, preventing Mark from controlling successfully.
Ola John overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

John working for a triangle but Mark defends it easily.

John is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Mark tries to free his leg and advance position but John is retaining full guard.

John tries to land a sweep but no joy.
John is working hard here to advance position.
Mark sitting in guard, not really doing much.

John has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Mark should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, John has tightened it up now! Mark should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
