PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Dakota Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mitsuyo Maeda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Dakota Martin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mitsuyo Maeda!
The judges for this bout are Andrew Berry, Daniel Bishop and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maeda blocks a head kick by Martin.
Maeda looks to land a body kick but Martin moved away.
Maeda stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Martin.
Martin swings for the body but Maeda moves out of range.
Maeda pulls out of a head kick attempt.
A telegraphed right hand from Martin misses the target.
Martin throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Maeda counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Maeda trying to pass the guard but Martin defending well.
Maeda sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Martin defending well though.
Maeda has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Maeda scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Martin is staying active underneath Maeda, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Maeda in particular looking to stall.

Martin regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Maeda.
Martin has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Maeda wants to control from the top but Martin keeps moving.

Maeda thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Martin's head.
Martin wants to get back to full guard.

Maeda is working for a kimura but Martin is defending it quite comfortably.

Maeda wants to work for an arm triangle but Martin is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Maeda wants to lay and pray for a moment but Martin keeps working.

Maeda content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Martin bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Maeda's guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Maeda shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Martin but Martin pushes him off and we're back to square one.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Maeda swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Martin.
Maeda throws a nice outside leg kick.
Maeda smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Maeda throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Martin.
Martin chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Maeda can pounce on him.

Maeda takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
We've been told by Martin's head coaches at K.O. Koala's that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Maeda throws the kick towards the body but Martin avoids it.
Maeda fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Martin on the side of the head.
Martin walks into a left hand.
Some wild striking there from Martin.

Maeda scores with a decent looking hook.
Maeda shoots in but no luck this time.
Dakota Martin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mitsuyo Maeda.

Martin takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Maeda avoids the body shot from Martin.
A solid leg kick lands there for Maeda.
Martin throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Maeda tries to bum rush Martin with a series of wild strikes but Martin uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

The fighters circling - Maeda throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Dakota Martin is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Maeda moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

Maeda shoots in looking for a takedown. Martin tries to sprawl out of it but Maeda keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Martin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Martin bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Maeda's head backwards.
Martin moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

and Martin counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Maeda thinking.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Maeda throws a strike aimed at the side of Martin's head but Martin avoids it well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Maeda connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Martin some visible discomfort.

Mitsuyo Maeda showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Martin's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Maeda fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Martin looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Maeda shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Martin pinned against the cage. Martin gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Martin rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Maeda moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Maeda throws a leg kick which misses Martin's front leg but catches the back leg as Martin tries to avoid it.

Mitsuyo Maeda comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Maeda has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
