PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Hathaway (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Takanori Gomi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gomi is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Scary. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 18 - 0, fighting out of London, Daniel Hathaway!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 10 - 2, fighting out of Tokyo, Takanori Gomi!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Radbod Blank and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hathaway with a hook.
Gomi misses with a straight right.

Gomi misses with a hook. Hathaway ducked under it nicely.
Daniel Hathaway seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hathaway misses with a jab, cross combination.
A jab from Hathaway finds it's way through Gomi's defenses.
Hathaway misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Gomi.
Gomi throws an overhand right that lands on Hathaway's shoulder, as Hathaway tries to avoid the shot.
Hathaway lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Gomi circles away quickly and effectively.
Sloppy strikes from Hathaway. Those never looked like landing.
Hathaway takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Hathaway gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Hathaway looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Gomi tries to free his leg and advance position but Hathaway is retaining full guard.

Hathaway keeping moving, preventing Gomi from controlling successfully.
Gomi with a flurry of punches that miss.
Gomi pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hathaway is keeping the position for now.
Gomi is still trying to improve position.
Hathaway looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Gomi postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Hathaway fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Sloppy strikes from Hathaway. Those never looked like landing.
Gomi shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Hathaway pinned against the ropes. Hathaway gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Hathaway misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Hathaway drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
A right-left combo lands from Hathaway.
Hathaway will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Gomi cracks Hathaway with a right hand to the side of the head.
Hathaway fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Gomi looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Hathaway, as that shot connected.
Hathaway ducks under a wild hook from Gomi.
Gomi connects with a jab.
Gomi missing with a left hand there. Hathaway was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Gomi looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Gomi throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Gomi missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Gomi wants to take a breather but Hathaway is having none of it.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Gomi is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Gomi slips a nice elbow through Hathaway's hands, connecting with Hathaway's forehead.
Gomi throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Hathaway is holding on to half guard well.
Hathaway tries to roll over but Gomi keeps him under control.
Hathaway knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gomi on the ground.
Gomi stalling.
Gomi throwing shots but Hathaway is blocking nicely.
Gomi tries to pass to full mount but Hathaway defends it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Takanori Gomi will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Gomi throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Hathaway rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

and Gomi counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Hathaway wants to control but Gomi is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Gomi scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Gomi is trying to control. Hathaway wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Gomi thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Hathaway's head.
Gomi moves nicely into side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hathaway is looking to regain half guard here but Gomi keeps moving and retains side control.

Gomi has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Gomi sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Hathaway is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Gomi cracks Hathaway with an elbow. That is naaassty.
You can see the frustration on Hathaway's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Hathaway gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Hathaway is looking to improve his position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Hathaway is refusing to be controlled, as Gomi sits in half guard.
Gomi lands with a punch from half guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Gomi throws a nice looking combination but Hathaway bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Hathaway is looking light on his feet compared to last time was saw him fight.
Gomi lands a really nice looking cross but Hathaway seems unphased.
A punch combination from Hathaway misses.

Gomi takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
No joy there for Hathaway, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Gomi on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.

and Gomi counters with a stiff right hand.
Daniel Hathaway is winning the standup battle so far.
Hathaway falls off balance throwing a combination
and Gomi cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Gomi gets a double leg takedown into Hathaway's guard.
Gomi wants to pass the guard but Hathaway is keeping the position.
Hathaway is trying to control the position but Gomi postures up.
Gomi trying to control but Hathaway is working from the bottom.
Gomi has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Takanori Gomi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Hathaway throws a good cross that connects.

Hathaway gets caught flat footed, as Gomi shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Gomi sitting in guard, not really doing much.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Hathaway has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Gomi has passed into side control.
Gomi content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hathaway gets back to half guard.

Gomi frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Gomi connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Gomi with shots to the head and body - Hathaway looks very uncomfortable down there.

Gomi lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

It looks like Daniel Hathaway has been cut.
Hathaway working to try and regain half guard.
Oh Hathaway is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Hathaway seems to have got his legs back now.

Gomi working for a guillotine from mount but Hathaway is in no mood to give up.
Gomi is trying to control here but Hathaway has managed to regain half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Gomi ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Takanori Gomi is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Gomi looks to land a combination but Hathaway avoids it well.
Gomi misses with a takedown attempt - Hathaway sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Gomi swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Hathaway.

And that's the end of the fight!
Takanori Gomi comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Gomi has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
