Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jerry Clock! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Henk Jan Van Gompel! The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Chad Campbell and John Roberts.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Van Gompel shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Clock as he avoids it easily. Van Gompel fails to land the takedown. Clock lands a head shot. Clock lands a two punch combo.
Clock leaves Van Gompel with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Jerry Clock has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Henk Jan Van Gompel. Van Gompel gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Clock counters with a nice double leg into guard. Clock trying to control but Van Gompel is working from the bottom. Clock stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Van Gompel swivels though and keeps the full guard. Van Gompel is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
That's one minute gone in the round. Clock in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Van Gompel is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Van Gompel trying to control from half guard but Clock is working away. Clock is trying to stand up here but Van Gompel is controlling him well. I've been told that Van Gompel has been drilling his wrestling of late, which has already helped him take this fight to the mat. Let's see how much of an impact it has on the outcome of the ground game. Van Gompel passes the guard and advances to mount! Clock is trying to escape the mount.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Van Gompel lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Van Gompel controlling the pace for now. Van Gompel working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Clock looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Van Gompel! Submission of the night perhaps?
