PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ryan Pena (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Simba Burns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pena comes to the cage accompanied by I Need You. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Ryan Pena! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Simba Burns! The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, James Glass and Colin Fotheringham.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pena misses with a jab, cross combination.
Pena throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Burns's waist but Burns gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Pena off to one side. Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Burns lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Pena has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Pena and we're back underway with a touch of gloves. Burns fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Burns takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Burns misses with a takedown attempt and Pena counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Pena. Pena breaks from the clinch.
Pena closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. You can see the frustration on Burns's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Pena tries for a kimura but Burns is defending well. Burns pushes Pena away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Pena gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Burns is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Burns regains half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Burns is looking to control Pena's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Burns avoid being mounted? Burns actively working from the bottom here. Pena trying to control the action but Burns is working from the bottom.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Burns shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Pena as he jumps to the side. Ryan Pena has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Simba Burns. Burns looks gassed! Pena has taken the fight to the clinch.
Burns is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Burns tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Pena just stands there and leans against the cage. Pena escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Burns shoots and misses and Pena counters with a nice double leg into side control. Burns won't be happy with that. Pena is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Burns is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Pena prevents Burns from escaping the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Burns is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Pena decides to stand back up. Burns misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. The fight moves into the clinch position. A knee to the head by Pena.
It looks like Simba Burns has been cut. Burns has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Pena is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Pena jumps guard and drags Burns to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Pena has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Burns can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Burns drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Burns jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Burns thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Pena looking to control.
Burns postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Pena is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Burns, into his guard. Burns has his foot on Pena's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pena works his way back into a safe position though. Burns tries to land a sweep but no joy. Burns looking for a guillotine here but Pena defends easily.
Burns has an active guard here but Pena has managed to pass into half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Burns looking for submissions off his back. Burns tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Pena has advanced to mount. Uh oh. Pena with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ryan Pena dominated that round. The cut man is working on Simba Burns's cut. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Donk. Burns catches Pena right on the button with a cross. The fight moves into the clinch position. Burns wants to break free but Pena has control.
Pena has picked Burns up - he's going for a ride! Pena dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard. Burns wants to control but Pena is keeping busy and won't allow it. Burns looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Burns is pressing down on Pena's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Pena is looking to stand up but Burns won't let him. Burns had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Pena is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Burns Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Pena's back instead. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Burns looking to break Pena's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Pena remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Burns will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

That's two minutes gone in the round. Burns working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Burns tightening his grip on Pena, looking for the choke. Pena is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Burns gets his way!

That's three minutes gone in the round. Burns avoiding Pena 's attempts to control his hands. Burns working for the choke. Pena tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Pena is desperately trying to improve his position but Burns has a good base and remains in mount. Burns quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Burns but it's paid off an Pena is forced to tap! Nice work by Burns.
