PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kan Garu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tom Belichick (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kan Garu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tom Belichick!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Chris Dean and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Garu misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Garu has been working on his balance at The Clinic , so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Belichick.
No luck for Garu with that takedown attempt.
Belichick lands a lovely overhand right.
Belichick displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Garu.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kan Garu. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Garu wants to clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Belichick misses with a jab, cross combination.

Garu throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Garu tries for a takedown but Belichick sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Belichick unleashes a big counter combination but Garu bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.

Garu pushes Belichick up against the cage in a clinch.
Belichick is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Belichick is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Garu looking to throw knees to the head but Belichick is blocking nicely.
Garu is trying to pull guard but Belichick has him pressed against the cage.

Belichick lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Garu pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Garu fails with the takedown.
Belichick defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Garu.

Garu shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Garu tries to score a power double leg takedown but Belichick sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Garu somewhat.
Belichick does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Belichick connects with a good right hand that stumbles Garu. Garu circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Belichick circles away from the clinch attempt.
Belichick let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Garu.
Belichick throws a counter combo.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Garu.

You can see the frustration on Belichick's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Belichick wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Garu is looking to take a break and control but Belichick is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Belichick is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Belichick tries to improve position but can't.
Belichick pushes Garu away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Garu gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Garu wants to lay and pray for a moment but Belichick keeps working.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Garu fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Belichick tries to bum rush Garu with a series of wild strikes but Garu uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Belichick leaves Garu with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom Belichick dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Garu takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Garu tries to close the distance and clinch but Belichick swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Garu lands a big head kick that sends Belichick tumbling to the mat! Garu takes a step backwards and waves Belichick back to his feet - he wants the finish!


Belichick is rocked!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Garu.
Garu is looking to clinch but Belichick is avoiding it.
Belichick lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

Garu has closed the distance and engaged Belichick in a clinch.
Belichick has had enough of the clinch but Garu keeps him there for the moment.
Garu has Belichick pressed against the cage, preventing Belichick from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Belichick is pressed up against the cage. Garu has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Belichick down to the mat. Belichick avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Belichick throws a series of punches but Garu avoids them all with ease.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Garu shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Belichick as he avoids it easily.

Garu wants to clinch.
Belichick looks to throw the jab but Garu is out of range.

Garu has closed the distance and engaged Belichick in a clinch.
Garu has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Belichick avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Belichick tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Garu prevents Belichick from breaking the clinch.

Garu has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Belichick is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Belichick wants to break free but Garu has control.
Garu has Belichick pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Belichick manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Belichick scores with an uppercut up the middle.
Garu fails to pull guard.

A frustrated look appears on Belichick's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Garu breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Garu tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Belichick paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Garu stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Belichick is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Belichick misses with a wild combination.
Kan Garu seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Belichick stuffs the takedown attempt from Garu. Garu gets slowly back to his feet.
No luck for Garu with that takedown attempt.
Garu is trying hard to land a takedown here. Belichick sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Garu lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Garu goes for a double leg but Belichick avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Belichick continues to drive forward.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Belichick uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Garu.
Belichick throws a nice looking combination but Garu bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Garu misses with a jab, cross combination.

Garu looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Belichick throws out a loose jab but Garu uses good head movement to avoid it.
Belichick misses with a looping right.
Garu closes this distance looking for a takedown but Belichick circles away.
Garu fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Belichick tries to counter by closing the distance.

Garu shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Belichick is trying to defend but Garu finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Belichick makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Belichick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Belichick stuffs the takedown attempt from Garu. Garu gets slowly back to his feet.
Belichick throws a shot from downtown. Garu moves away and avoids it.
Garu uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Belichick.
Garu attempts a counter takedown but Belichick avoids it well and moves away.
Tom Belichick seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Garu misses with a takedown attempt - Belichick sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Garu shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Belichick but Belichick pushes him off and we're back to square one.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kan Garu. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Despite the aggression on Belichick's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Belichick misses with a looping left.
Sloppy strikes from Belichick. Those never looked like landing.
Garu fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Garu slips under a jab from Belichick.
Belichick throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Garu.
A combination from Garu does no damage.
Belichick is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Garu with a body shot.

Garu lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.

Garu closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Belichick's guard.
Garu wants to control from the top but Belichick keeps moving.

Belichick is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Garu frees his head nicely. Oh but Belichick has switched to an armbar! Garu is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:38 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Armbar). Tom Belichick!
