Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Grover Erickson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Devin Masters! The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Masters feints and as Erickson raises his hands in defense, Masters changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Masters wants to control from the top but Erickson keeps moving. Erickson is looking for a triangle here but Masters uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Erickson striking from the bottom but nothing landed.
Masters tries for a kimura but Erickson is defending well. Masters sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Erickson is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Masters wants to lay and pray for a moment but Erickson keeps working. Erickson tries to bench press Masters off him but Masters keeps the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Erickson looking for a sweep but Masters has passed into full mount! Oh no! Erickson tries to hold on but Masters pushes him away. Masters looking to control but Erickson is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Masters controlling his opponent. Erickson is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Erickson swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Masters trying to control but he's not successful this time. Masters is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Erickson to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Erickson shrugs it off. Masters wants to control the pace but Erickson is squirming around nicely. Erickson manages to regain half guard. Good work. Erickson wants to control but Masters is keeping busy and won't allow it. Masters moves into side control, avoiding a weak kimura attempt from Erickson.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Erickson is not content to let Masters control the position. Masters working away. Masters tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Masters looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Masters wants to lay and pray for a moment but Erickson keeps working. Masters in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows. Masters wants to lay and pray for a moment but Erickson keeps working. Masters passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Erickson! Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Erickson wants to control but Masters is having none of it. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Devin Masters dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Erickson tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Masters paws at him with a jab and circles away. Masters tries to bum rush Erickson with a series of wild strikes but Erickson uses good footwork to avoid the assault. No luck for Masters with that takedown attempt. An attempted straight right counter from Erickson misses the target. Masters tries to clinch there but Erickson circles away.
Masters has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Masters gets a double leg takedown into Erickson's guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Erickson keeping moving, preventing Masters from controlling successfully. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Erickson tries to strike from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Erickson is trying to keep Masters in close.
Masters wants to control from the top but Erickson keeps moving. Erickson pulls Masters in close to his closed guard and prevents Masters from doing any damage or advancing position. Masters trying to control the position from guard on top but Erickson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Erickson keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Erickson clinches with his opponent.
Erickson fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Masters wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Masters is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Erickson pulls him back up using the underhooks. Grover Erickson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Devin Masters. Erickson gets control of Masters's arms and successfully pulls guard. Erickson will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back. Masters trying to control but Erickson is working from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Erickson punching from the bottom - just letting Masters know he's still in a fight. Masters wants to get up but he can't break Erickson's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Erickson working a defensive guard but Masters manages to pass into side control anyway.
Erickson trying to control but Masters flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back! Masters slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
Erickson is trying to get back to his feet but Masters has full control of the position and if anything, Erickson has just worked his way into a worse spot. Masters is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Erickson taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Masters.
