Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Johny Masazaki! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ippo Makunouchi! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Hirohito Nitta.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Makunouchi throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Masazaki on the side of the head. Masazaki takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Makunouchi bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Masazaki's head. Makunouchi works over Masazaki's head and body with a nice combination. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Masazaki. Makunouchi bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Masazaki's head backwards. Makunouchi throws an overhand right that lands on Masazaki's shoulder, as Masazaki tries to avoid the shot. Masazaki shoots in but no luck this time. Makunouchi swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Masazaki fails with a takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Johny Masazaki. That's going to take a lot out of him. Makunouchi scores with a jab to the body.
That's one minute gone in the round. Makunouchi gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Masazaki prevents Makunouchi from getting back to his feet. Makunouchi wants to get back to his feet but Masazaki passes into half guard.
Masazaki content to control rather than advance. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Masazaki is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Makunouchi is kicking away at Masazaki from the bottom - trying to push off and stand up. Masazaki grabs hold of a leg and drops back for a heel hook! The two fighters roll across the mat, with Makunouchi trying to push Masazaki off... Makunouchi taps! He's tapped! This one is all over! A throwback to the old Pancrase there with an infrequently seen submission hold! Nice work.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Heel Hook). Johny Masazaki! The defeated Ippo Makunouchi had this to say: 'I came out and did my best tonight.
