Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Chris Weidman! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rodrigo Silva! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Mauricio Rocha and Leandro Rodrigues.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Both fighters are only really looking to counter, so after a good 30 seconds of circling eachother endlessly, the referee has stepped in and told them both to be more aggressive. Weidman clinches up against the cage. The pace really dropping off here, momentarily. Weidman pulls guard successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Weidman has control of Silva's left arm, preventing Silva from doing any damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Weidman looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Weidman pulls Silva in close to his closed guard and prevents Silva from doing any damage or advancing position. Silva must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Weidman looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Weidman tries to close the distance and clinch up but Silva swats him away and circles back towards the center. Weidman tries to clinch but Silva is having none of it. Silva doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter. Weidman takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Silva misses with a wild body shot. Weidman gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Weidman manages to pull guard.
Weidman seems keen to control Silva's posture. Weidman manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Silva manages to get himself to full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Weidman sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Silva's guard. Weidman is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Silva! Weidman forces the positional change into back control. Weidman looking for the rear naked choke. And he's got it! Silva taps!
