Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Laverne Mathews! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Egor Boss! The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Edson Gomes and Emerson Jorge.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Boss fails with a takedown attempt from distance. It looked like Mathews was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit. Mathews takes a kick to the side of the head.
It looks like Laverne Mathews has been cut. Mathews throws a body kick but he wasn't in range. Boss is trying hard to land a takedown here. Mathews sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Boss tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Mathews defends well and Boss ends up having to push Mathews into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Laverne Mathews has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Egor Boss. Boss fails with a takedown attempt. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Boss drops Mathews with a beautiful combination! Mathews stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Boss is looking for the KO!
Mathews is rocked! This has been an exciting period of action! Boss tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Mathews swivels and escapes. Oh Mathews is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Mathews slaps away a takedown attempt from Boss, before circling back to the center of the mat. Mathews dodges the punch combination from Boss.
Boss throws a head kick but Mathews moves out of range.
Boss looking to score a takedown here. Mathews is defending well but Boss drives through and ends up in Mathews's guard. Boss looks winded! Boss wants to pass the guard but Mathews is keeping the position. Boss throws a big elbow that misses. Boss has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Mathews has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Mathews seems to have got his legs back now. The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Boss tries to close the distance and clinch up but Mathews swats him away and circles back towards the center. Boss tries to keep at a distance but Mathews has taken the fight into the clinch. A hook to the body from Mathews.
Mathews gets control of Boss's arms and successfully pulls guard. Mathews will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back. Boss trying to control but Mathews is working from the bottom. Mathews looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Mathews wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Boss throws an elbow that misses. Mathews uses the momentum to reverse the position. That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mathews accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Boss wants to sweep but no luck. Mathews wants to get up but he can't break Boss's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Mathews is in close to Boss's body, working some short punches and elbows. Boss controls Mathews momentarily but Mathews frees himself.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Boss tries for a takedown but Mathews sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Boss moves out of range of the body kick. Mathews throws a half hearted mid kick. Boss steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Mathews. Boss is looking to clinch but Mathews is avoiding it.

Boss tries to close the distance and clinch up but Mathews swats him away and circles back towards the center. Mathews really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Boss looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Boss might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Mathews haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Mathews has Boss pulled in close to control his posture. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Boss trying to control the position from guard on top but Mathews is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Boss throws a lazy head kick and Mathews counters with a series of strikes. Boss will be more careful next time no doubt. Boss pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Mathews pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way. Mathews is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Boss's half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Boss is defending against the submission attempts here by Mathews.
Boss has hold of Mathews's hands but Mathews slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Boss is trying to stand up here but Mathews is controlling him well. Mathews is looking for a kimura but Boss is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mathews to get the leverage. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Boss is trying to maintain the position but Mathews is very close to passing his half guard. Laverne Mathews overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
