PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between RP McMurphy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Hanlon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mark Hanlon told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, RP McMurphy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 12 - 0, fighting out of London, Mark Hanlon!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, David Schapiro and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

McMurphy scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Hanlon is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but McMurphy pulls his head out easily.
McMurphy seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hanlon does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

McMurphy is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

Hanlon has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
McMurphy is stalling here. Hanlon is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! McMurphy seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Hanlon has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Hanlon is fighting to break McMurphy's control of his arms but McMurphy is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McMurphy manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hanlon manages to get himself to full guard.

McMurphy lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
McMurphy throws an elbow that misses. Hanlon uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in McMurphy's guard. Nice move by Hanlon!

Hanlon thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

McMurphy manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hanlon manages to get himself to full guard.

Hanlon working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. McMurphy doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. McMurphy manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McMurphy looking to sit in guard and control but Hanlon gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Mark Hanlon will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Hanlon throws the left hand but McMurphy avoids the punch easily.
McMurphy misses with a body shot.
McMurphy looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Hanlon lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but McMurphy circles away quickly and effectively.
A punch combination from Hanlon misses.
No joy there for Hanlon, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Hanlon tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. McMurphy manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
McMurphy feinted with a counter takedown.
Hanlon throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Hanlon falls off balance throwing a combination
and McMurphy makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Hanlon misses with an uppercut. McMurphy saw that one coming.

McMurphy closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Hanlon did well to prevent McMurphy getting side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
McMurphy uses his free foot to push down on Hanlon's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Hanlon.

McMurphy postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Hanlon looks a forlorn figure.


Mark Hanlon's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Mark Hanlon's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:40 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). RP McMurphy!
In his post fight interview, RP McMurphy gave a big smile as he said 'Thank you everybody for coming. My opponent, hats off to you, thanks for the great fight, all respect. My coaches and Team Burns helped me so much, thank you. I will continue to shock and inspire nations'.
