Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Don Marciano Jr! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Steven Work! The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Dirk Anderson and Peter Branson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Marciano Jr tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Work defends well and Marciano Jr ends up having to push Work into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Marciano Jr could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Marciano Jr fails with an attempt to clinch.
As Marciano Jr backs off Work throws a huge counter combo but Marciano Jr manages to avoid it all. Marciano Jr doesn't manage to clinch there - Work circles away.
Marciano Jr slaps away a takedown attempt from Work, before circling back to the center of the mat. Marciano Jr shoots in looking for a takedown. Work tries to sprawl out of it but Marciano Jr keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Work manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Work throws out a counter right but Marciano Jr avoids it with no problem. Horrible takedown attempt by Marciano Jr or perhaps it was just good defense by Work, which made it look bad. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Don Marciano Jr. That's going to take a lot out of him. Work moves into the clinch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A frustrated look appears on Marciano Jr's face as he tries to break the clinch. Work is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Marciano Jr gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Marciano Jr wants to break the clinch but can't.
Work's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
That's one minute gone in the round. A combination from Marciano Jr does no damage. Work shapes to counter with a head kick. Marciano Jr throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Work counters with a nice double leg into side control. Marciano Jr won't be happy with that. Work lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. Marciano Jr is looking for a sweep. Check out the look on Work's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Marciano Jr is trying to buck Work off. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Marciano Jr is being controlled here. Work trying to control the action but Marciano Jr is working from the bottom. Work has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Marciano Jr is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Work yanks on the arm and Marciano Jr is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Work.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Steven Work! Don Marciano Jr spoke after the fight, saying 'Be warned, I'm going to come back better and stronger than ever!'.
