PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Boby Sapp (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kevin Shears (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sapp has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Boby Sapp!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kevin Shears!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Frank Dennis and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shears shoots in but Sapp avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Shears tries to keep at a distance but Sapp has taken the fight into the clinch.
Shears stalling in the clinch but Sapp improves position.
Shears is looking to break free of the clinch but Sapp has double underhooks.
Shears is trying to break the clinch but Sapp has him pressed against the cage.

Sapp is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Shears can't fight it off and eventually Sapp manages to take the fight to the floor. Shears looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Shears is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Shears looking for a guillotine here but Sapp defends easily.
Shears is trying to control the position but Sapp postures up.

Shears being controlled here, momentarily.
Sapp advances to half guard.
Shears should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Shears wants to control but Sapp is keeping busy.
Shears is pressing down on Sapp's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Sapp is breathing heavily.
Shears is trying to control the position but Sapp postures up.
Sapp controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Shears wants to sweep but no luck.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Shears has a closed guard, preventing Sapp from standing up.
Shears is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Sapp will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Shears throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Sapp working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Sapp controlling from the top position.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Shears not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Sapp passes Shears's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Shears is trying to stand back up but Sapp is controlling him
Sapp is taking a breather. Shears says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sapp thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Sapp prevents Shears from improving his position.
Sapp tries to pass the half guard into mount. Shears knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Shears is looking for a sweep. Sapp is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Sapp content to control rather than advance.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Shears trying to control but Sapp postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Boby Sapp dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


No luck for Sapp with that takedown attempt.
Shears keeps the fight on the outside.
Shears closes this distance looking for a takedown but Sapp circles away.
Shears misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Shears shoots in looking for a takedown. Sapp tries to sprawl out of it but Shears keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sapp manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Boby Sapp has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kevin Shears.
Shears shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Sapp as he avoids it easily.
Sapp tries to clinch up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shears looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Sapp is looking to escape.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Shears moves nicely into side control.

Sapp tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Sapp is trying to get back to his feet.

Shears decides to stand back up.
Shears shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Shears chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Shears swinging wilding here.
Sapp fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Sapp doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Shears counters with a nice leg kick.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Shears slips a jab and a cross from Sapp.
Shears will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Sapp tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Shears fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Boby Sapp seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Sapp gets a takedown into half guard.
Sapp stops Shears from getting back to his feet.

Sapp content to control rather than advance.
Shears is looking to escape.
Shears tries to roll over but Sapp keeps him under control.
Sapp missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Shears has hold of Sapp's hands but Sapp slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
No luck for Shears with that takedown attempt.
Sapp throws a series of punches but Shears moves out of range.

Shears gets caught flat footed, as Sapp shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Sapp works over Shears with some ground and pound from guard.

Sapp gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Sapp tries to clinch
and Shears counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Horrible takedown by Shears or perhaps it was just good defense by Sapp which made him look bad.

Sapp closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Sapp working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Sapp is putting a hurting on Shears here, landing some big shots from side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Boby Sapp dominated that second round.
That's time! Sapp's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Sapp tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Shears swivels and escapes.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Shears.

Shears decides to stand up, so the ref orders Sapp to his feet.
Shears connects with a high kick.
Sapp closes the distance looking to clinch
and Shears counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Sapp clinches.
Shears wants a takedown but no success here.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Sapp decides to pull guard.
Sapp on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Sapp tries to get out of the position.
Shears pushes down on Sapp's leg and manages to get into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Sapp pushes Shears off and gets back to his feet.
A shot to the body from Sapp misses
and Shears counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Sapp tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Shears counters with a nice double leg into side control. Sapp won't be happy with that.
Shears is looking to take a break and control but Sapp is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
You can see the frustration on Sapp's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Sapp lands a decent little punch to the body.
Shears in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Shears working away.
Sapp throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.
Sapp is trying to work for a sweep but Shears has mounted him!
A nice elbow there by Shears.
Sapp is trying to escape the mount.
Shears trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Shears goes for an armbar but Sapp turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Sapp.

Shears is controlling Sapp's posture.
Shears wants to stand up but Sapp is controlling him.
Shears looking to hit a scissor sweep but Sapp is one step ahead there.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Shears trying to control the position.
Boby Sapp overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Shears looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Sapp wants to control from the top but Shears keeps moving.
Shears utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Sapp darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Sapp wants to control but Shears is keeping him busy.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kevin Shears comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Sapp has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
