PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ali Aliev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jurg Voront (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Aliev might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Lezginka. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ali Aliev!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jurg Voront!
The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Konstantin Menshow and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Aliev fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Voront, pushing him back against the cage.

Voront manages to pull guard.
Aliev sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Voront controls Aliev momentarily but Aliev frees himself.
Aliev is looking to stand up but Voront won't let him.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Voront can do anything to dispel that myth.
Aliev controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Aliev stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Voront swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Aliev trying to control the position from guard on top but Voront is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Aliev working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.

Aliev postures up in Voront's guard and throws a big left but Voront blocks it.

Aliev drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Aliev jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Aliev accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Aliev controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Voront controls Aliev momentarily but Aliev frees himself.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Voront throws a half hearted mid kick.
Voront throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Aliev counters with a stiff right hand.
Jurg Voront seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Voront feints and as Aliev raises his hands in defense, Voront changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Voront looks winded!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Aliev seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Aliev has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Voront trying to control but Aliev is working from the bottom.
Aliev has control of Voront's left arm, preventing Voront from doing any damage.
Aliev tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Voront must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Aliev working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Voront doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Voront manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Aliev fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Voront avoids it really well and circles away.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Voront drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Aliev tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
Voront avoids the attempt from Aliev to control.
Voront scoring with strikes but Aliev is staying in there.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Aliev is looking to get to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Ali Aliev will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


A head kick misses from Voront.
Aliev shoots in looking for a takedown. Voront tries to sprawl out of it but Aliev keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Voront manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Aliev throws a sloppy head kick and Voront moves out of range easily.
Despite the aggression on Voront's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Aliev keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Voront.
Voront throws a body punch but Aliev moves out of range.

Aliev shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Aliev was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Voront is breathing heavily.
Aliev lands an elbow.
Ali Aliev overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Aliev wants to control but Voront is keeping him busy.

Aliev lands a few punches from side control.
Aliev looking to control but instead Voront has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
Aliev lands strikes from half guard.
Aliev seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Voront does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Aliev is nestled in close to Voront, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Aliev wants to pass to mount but Voront is defending the position.
Aliev lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Aliev slips a nice elbow through Voront's hands, connecting with Voront's forehead.
Aliev wants to take a breather but Voront is having none of it.
Aliev wants to free his trapped foot but Voront is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Aliev wants to lay and pray for a moment but Voront keeps working.

Aliev not doing much here.
We've been hearing that Aliev has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Aliev is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Aliev tries to pass the half guard into mount. Voront knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Aliev slips a nice elbow through Voront's hands, connecting with Voront's forehead.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Aliev wants to free his trapped foot but Voront is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Aliev is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Voront is just riding it out for now. Aliev eventually gives up the hold.
Aliev is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Aliev in particular looking to stall.
Voront is looking to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Voront stuffs the takedown.
Voront lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Aliev changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Voront tries to avoid it but Aliev manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Voront to the ground. Voront escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Voront is looking to clinch but Aliev is avoiding it.
No luck for Aliev with that takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ali Aliev. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Voront manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Aliev on his heels. He'll look to pass Aliev's guard now, I'm sure.

Aliev instigates a clinch.

Voront breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Voront gets tackled into the cage by Aliev. Aliev maintains the clinch.
Voront struggles to land a body shot inside as Aliev controls his hands.

Aliev pulls guard effortlessly.
Voront sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Aliev's guard.
Aliev is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Aliev is looking to control Voront's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Aliev avoid being mounted?
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Aliev is pressing down on Voront's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Aliev pulls Voront in close to prevent any damage.
Aliev wants to hit a switch here but Voront passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Aliev there!
Voront avoids the attempt from Aliev to control.

Voront looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.

Aliev wants to control but Voront is having none of it.
Jurg Voront has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Ali Aliev is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
