PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Greg Madison (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Riley Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Madison is coming into this fight with a significant injury, which will no doubt have an effect on his cardio. Riley Gracie told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
18 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Greg Madison! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Riley Gracie ! The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Paul Gruel and Jeff Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gracie shoots in for a double leg but Madison sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Madison is breathing heavily. Gracie uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Madison. Gracie blocks a jab. Gracie fails to land the takedown. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gracie is defended easily by Madison. A little feinted left hand from Madison on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. Greg Madison has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Riley Gracie . Gracie shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Madison but Madison pushes him off and we're back to square one. Madison misses the shot to the body. Riley Gracie seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Gracie slips a jab from Madison. Gracie shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Madison but Madison pushes him off and we're back to square one. A counter left hand to the body from Madison misses its target. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gracie throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Madison's waist but Madison gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gracie off to one side. Gracie shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Madison as he jumps to the side. Gracie tries for a takedown but Madison sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Gracie walks into a jab. Gracie closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gracie seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Madison does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Gracie is trying to work for a kimura but Madison is defending well.
Gracie is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Gracie slows the pace down in half guard. Gracie is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gracie wants to pass to mount but Madison is defending the position. Madison gets full guard. Gracie wants to control from the top but Madison keeps moving.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gracie looking to pass the guard. Gracie pushing down on Madison's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Gracie is taking a breather. Madison says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Gracie is trying to work for a kimura but Madison is defending well.

That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Gracie works his foot free and advances to mount. Gracie trying to control but he's not successful this time. Gracie is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully. Gracie wants to take his opponent's back but he's not managed it. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Gracie is still trying to improve position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Riley Gracie will probably get the nod. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Horrible takedown attempt by Gracie or perhaps it was just good defense by Madison, which made it look bad. Gracie tries to score a power double leg takedown but Madison sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Gracie somewhat. Madison stuffs the takedown. Greg Madison has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Riley Gracie . Gracie shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Madison defends it nicely. Gracie with a poor takedown and Madison counters with a nice uppercut. Gracie tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Madison defends well and Gracie ends up having to push Madison into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Madison looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. Gracie will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Madison throwing a counter right hand but Gracie manages to avoid it. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gracie shoots in but no luck this time. Madison fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Gracie manages to avoid it. Madison ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Gracie moves away. Gracie is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Gracie closes the distance and clinches up with Madison, looking for a takedown. Gracie pushes Madison against the cage but Madison circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. It looked like Madison wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Gracie changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Madison tries to avoid it but Gracie manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Madison to the ground. Madison escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Greg Madison is winning the standup battle so far. Gracie shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Madison but Madison pushes him off and we're back to square one.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gracie shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Madison as he avoids it easily. Madison is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Gracie can do to turn this around? Gracie shoots and misses and Madison connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Gracie tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Madison defends well and Gracie ends up having to push Madison into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Madison was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit. Gracie shoots in for a takedown but Madison shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Madison has managed to clinch.
Madison escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

That's two minutes gone in the round. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Gracie mounts Madison! Really nice guard pass there! Madison defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Gracie . Gracie jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Madison manages to avoid the submission attempt. You can see the frustration on Madison's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gracie is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Madison knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Madison gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Gracie is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Gracie trying to control but Madison is having none of it. Gracie wants to control the action but instead Madison gets a body lock and reverses into Gracie 's guard! Nice work!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gracie is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Gracie has his feet on Madison's thighs here. He's pushed Madison off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Madison screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:49 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Riley Gracie ! Riley Gracie decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
