With a record of 9 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Oscar Guttuierez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Caliman Matos!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Colin Fray and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matos fails to land the takedown.

Matos darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Guttuierez won't allow Matos to pass to mount.
Matos stops Guttuierez from getting back to his feet.

Matos is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Guttuierez is trying to stand.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Matos takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Matos thows a huge punch but Guttuierez dodges it nicely.

Matos is working for a kimura but Guttuierez is defending it quite comfortably.

Matos is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Guttuierez can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Guttuierez has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.

Matos with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Guttuierez knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Matos on the ground.
Matos misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Matos goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Guttuierez turns into him and now he's in Matos's guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Matos keeping moving, preventing Guttuierez from controlling successfully.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Matos shoots in looking for a takedown but Guttuierez manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Matos's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Matos doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Guttuierez cracks Matos with a right hand to the side of the head.
Matos has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Matos tries to pull guard but Guttuierez holds him up against the cage and eventually Matos drops back down to his feet.
Oscar Guttuierez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Caliman Matos.

Guttuierez escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Guttuierez throws a lazy right hand but Matos sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Matos is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.

As Guttuierez backs off Matos throws a huge counter combo but Guttuierez manages to avoid it all.

Guttuierez is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Matos can't fight it off and eventually Guttuierez manages to take the fight to the floor. Matos looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Guttuierez got a little sloppy there for a moment and Matos has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Guttuierez has managed to get both his arms back between Matos's legs - danger averted.

Matos lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Matos tries to free his leg and advance position but Guttuierez is retaining full guard.

Matos throws a big right hand that misses.
Matos stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Guttuierez swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Matos has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Matos is pushing down on Guttuierez's leg trying to pass to half guard. Guttuierez is fighting to maintain full guard but Matos has managed to sneak the leg through.
Matos scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Matos uses his free foot to push down on Guttuierez's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Guttuierez.
Guttuierez wants to control but Matos is having none of it.
Matos throwing strikes but Guttuierez bucks up and reverses the position. He's now in guard on top.
Matos tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Guttuierez has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

That was a close second round but I would say that Oscar Guttuierez will probably get the nod.

Guttuierez leaves Matos with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Matos closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Guttuierez to the mat! Guttuierez manages to get full guard.

Matos wants to finish this one by submission but Guttuierez is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Matos.

Matos has control of Guttuierez's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Guttuierez regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Matos avoids the attempt from Guttuierez to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Matos throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Guttuierez because Matos loaded up on that one.

Matos passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Guttuierez!

Guttuierez is looking to improve his position but Matos isn't that keen on the idea.
Oh Guttuierez is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Matos loads up on a couple of big shots to the head that have Guttuierez scrambling to escape. He can't get free though and several more unanswered shots from Matos land to the head. The referee has no choice but to stop the fight. Matos stands and salutes the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:32 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Caliman Matos!
A relieved looking Caliman Matos thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
