PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Glass Joe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Maximus Meridius (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Maximus Meridius told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Glass Joe!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Maximus Meridius!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Daniel Cesar and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Joe looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Meridius is fending him off so far but Joe persists. Nope, Meridius circles away and we're back to standing.
Joe tries for a takedown but Meridius sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Meridius drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Joe defends it well.
Meridius has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Joe.
Joe shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Meridius defends it nicely.
Meridius tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Glass Joe. That's going to take a lot out of him.

That's one minute gone in the round.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Joe explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Meridius misses with a takedown

and Joe counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Meridius wants to improve his position but Joe is controlling well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Joe working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Joe with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Joe drops an elbow to the side of Meridius's head.
Joe takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Ground and pound from Joe.
Meridius moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Meridius working a defensive guard here.
Meridius tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Joe scoring with punches to the head and body.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Joe postures up and lands a big shot to Meridius's brow.
Meridius working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Joe.
Joe wants to control from the top but Meridius keeps moving.

Joe got a little sloppy there for a moment and Meridius has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Joe has managed to get both his arms back between Meridius's legs - danger averted.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Meridius can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Joe controls the pace.
Meridius is looking to sweep but instead, Joe has passed into half guard.
Meridius wants to get back to full guard but Joe has mounted him!
Meridius is working to get back to half guard.
Meridius is in a horrible position here. Joe smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Joe pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Joe cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Meridius is desperately trying to improve his position but Joe has a good base and remains in mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Joe raining down shots from the mount!
Joe looking to control but Meridius is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Meridius is working to get back to half guard.
Meridius bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Joe bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Meridius's guard.

Joe distracts Meridius with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Joe landing with the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Joe postures up and lands a big shot to Meridius's brow.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Joe's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Joe passes Meridius's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Meridius is staying active underneath Joe, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Glass Joe dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Joe shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Meridius napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Meridius throws Joe to one side and escapes!
No luck with that takedown attempt from Joe.
Meridius with the counter takedown but Joe avoids it easily.
Joe fails with the takedown

and Meridius counters with a single leg into guard. Joe didn't expect that.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Meridius throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Joe works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Meridius trying to control but Joe is working from the bottom.
Joe looking to hit a scissor sweep but Meridius is one step ahead there.
Joe working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Meridius.

Meridius is sitting in close to Joe's body. Joe has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Meridius is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Meridius is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Joe.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:44 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Glass Joe!
Glass Joe retains his middleweight title!
In his post fight interview, Glass Joe started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
