1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Angelo Mendez! The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Jonathan Paton and Columbo Gatti.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice takedown defense from Dyrdek. No joy for Mendez on that attempt. Mendez misses with a wild combination.
Mendez misses the jab. Dyrdek jabbing away but nothing is landing. Dyrdek avoids a punch combination nicely.

Mendez lands a head shot. Dyrdek misses with a takedown attempt - Mendez sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Dyrdek fails miserably with a takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rob Dyrdek. That's going to take a lot out of him. Mendez tried to score with a low kick but Dyrdek checks it. A counter left hand to the body from Dyrdek misses its target. Mendez lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Dyrdek circles away quickly and effectively. Dyrdek with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Dyrdek tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Mendez swivels and escapes. Mendez looks to land a left hand but Dyrdek moved out of range nicely. Mendez closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Dyrdek sneaks out the side door and pushes Mendez away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Dyrdek moves into range and clinches up with Mendez. A frustrated look appears on Mendez's face as he tries to break the clinch. Mendez is defending well against a takedown attempt. Dyrdek breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Mendez tries to work over Dyrdek's front leg with a kick but Dyrdek checks it. Dyrdek lands with a thumping leg kick.

Mendez is trying to break the clinch but Dyrdek has him pressed against the cage. Mendez working hard to break the clinch. Dyrdek prevents Mendez from breaking the clinch. Dyrdek pulls guard effortlessly. Dyrdek trying to control the position here. Dyrdek wriggles free and stands up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Dyrdek gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Mendez gets tackled into the cage by Dyrdek. Dyrdek maintains the clinch. Dyrdek breaks the clinch.

Dyrdek tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mendez sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Dyrdek somewhat. Dyrdek shoots in looking for a takedown but Mendez manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Dyrdek's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Mendez throws a right and a left that Dyrdek avoids nicely. Dyrdek drops down looking for a counter takedown but Mendez sprawls and moves away. Dyrdek closes the distance and clinches. The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end. Mendez wants to get back to striking at distance but Dyrdek won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Angelo Mendez will probably get the nod. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Dyrdek might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Mendez throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Dyrdek works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Dyrdek trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage. Mendez postures up and lands a big shot to Dyrdek's brow. Dyrdek is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Dyrdek seems keen to control Mendez's posture. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Dyrdek is on top in guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mendez wants to stand and escape but Dyrdek is having none of it. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mendez can do anything to dispel that myth. Dyrdek decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Mendez fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Dyrdek sprawls well initially but Mendez persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Dyrdek is pressing down on Mendez's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Mendez throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Dyrdek works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Mendez working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Dyrdek is on top in guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Mendez is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Dyrdek presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat. Still in the clinch, Mendez scores with a nice short uppercut. Dyrdek's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Mendez avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Mendez throws a nice looking combination but Dyrdek bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Mendez has worked on his takedown defense in the runup to this fight and it is paying off so far. A punch combination from Mendez misses. Dyrdek looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Mendez is fending him off so far but Dyrdek persists. Nope, Mendez circles away and we're back to standing. Dyrdek shoots for a double leg takedown but Mendez sprawls well. He's pushed Dyrdek's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. And an attempted straight right on the counter from Mendez! But no joy. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rob Dyrdek. That's going to take a lot out of him. Dyrdek fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Mendez avoids it really well and circles away. Mendez will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Dyrdek shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Mendez pinned against the cage. Mendez gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Dyrdek scores with a one two! Mendez had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes. Mendez stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Mendez wants it to stay on the feet. Mendez tries to counter by closing the distance. Mendez displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Dyrdek. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Mendez misses with a wild combination.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Mendez lands a head shot. Mendez slaps away a takedown attempt from Dyrdek, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Mendez sizes up Dyrdek with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. Dyrdek shoots for a takedown but Mendez saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Dyrdek has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Mendez is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
