3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Walter Conan! The judges for this bout are Andrew Berry, Chris Edwards and William Gold.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Palhares closes the distance but Conan moves to the side and Conan counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
It looks like Ronaldo Palhares has been cut. Palhares has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Palhares throws the left hand but Conan avoids the punch easily. Despite the aggression on Conan's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter. Palhares misses the jab. Conan throws a shot from downtown. Palhares moves away and avoids it. Palhares ducks under a wild hook from Conan. Conan looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple. A decent looking cross lands there for Conan. Conan closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Palhares's guard. Palhares is looking for a triangle but Conan pushes his legs off easily.
Palhares is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Conan defends well. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Palhares trying to control the position.

No chance. Palhares has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Conan can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Conan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Palhares. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Conan gets to his feet. Palhares looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Ronaldo Palhares seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Palhares moves into range and clinches up with Conan. Conan breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Conan decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Palhares makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Palhares. Conan got a little sloppy there for a moment and Palhares has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Conan has managed to get both his arms back between Palhares's legs - danger averted. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Conan avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Palhares had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Conan defends it easily. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Palhares has a closed guard, preventing Conan from standing up. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Palhares is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Conan is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Conan is controlling Palhares's posture. Possibly, maybe, no Palhares has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Conan is trying to control Palhares's posture but Palhares avoids it. Palhares thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Palhares is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Conan has escaped the position, nice work there. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Palhares is looking to take a break and control but Conan is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Palhares is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Conan is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Sloppy strikes there by Palhares. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Conan is not content to let Palhares control the position. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Palhares seems to be the aggressor now - he's rolled into the armbar and extended it - Conan is clearly in a lot of pain. He's tapping! He's tapping! What an ending! One minute you're in a dominant position, the next you've got a notch in the loss column - that's why we all love this sport!
