PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sean Juan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Patton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 17 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Sean Juan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rick Patton!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Lou da Vinci and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Patton throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Juan tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Patton is in Juan's guard.

Juan looking for a sweep. Not yet Juan, not yet.
Juan lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Patton pulls Juan in close to his closed guard and prevents Juan from doing any damage or advancing position.

Juan is working hard here to advance position.
Patton tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Juan has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Juan wants to pass the guard but Patton is keeping the position.
Patton looking to hit a scissor sweep but Juan is one step ahead there.
Juan slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Juan tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Juan tries for a kimura but Patton is defending well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Juan tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Juan has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Patton stops Juan from passing to mount.

Patton is looking to improve his position.
Juan tries to pass to full mount but Patton defends it.

Juan is trying to work for a kimura but Patton is defending well.
Juan works his way into full mount!
Patton slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Juan wants to free his trapped foot but Patton is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Patton wants to improve his position but Juan is controlling well.
Juan tries to pass to full mount but Patton defends it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Patton is looking to improve his position.
Juan wants to pass to mount but Patton is defending the position.
Patton is trying to maintain the position but Juan is very close to passing his half guard.
Juan wants to pass to mount but Patton is defending the position.
Patton gets back to full guard.

Patton is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Juan is aware though and is defending well.
Juan stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Patton swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Patton tries to land a sweep but no joy.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Patton has momentary wrist control but Juan slips an elbow through the middle.
Juan won't allow Patton to sweep him here.
Patton bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Juan's guard.

Juan is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Patton wants to control from the top but Juan keeps moving.

Patton cracks Juan with a solid left hand.
Patton passes Juan's left leg - he's now in half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Juan moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Juan has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Patton can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sean Juan dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Patton feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Juan is on top in guard.

Patton can't keep his opponent in guard - Juan advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Juan tries to pass to full mount but Patton defends it.
Patton is looking to improve his position.

Patton won't allow Juan to pass to mount.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Juan prevents Patton from getting the reversal.

Patton tries to improve his position but Juan has taken his back! Juan has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Patton tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Juan pushes Patton away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Sean Juan!
Sean Juan very nearly forgot to thank KAISER Nutrition - Q160/$250 amongst all the excitement of his win but just as the interview came to a close, he screamed their name. Hopefully he'll get a few nice freebies in the mail as a thank you.
