Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kevin Rush! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dj Brown! The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Gregory Folan and William Peck.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Brown throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Kevin Rush seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Rush misses with a head kick.
Brown appeared to try and counter that last move with a leg kick. Brown lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Rush backs up against the cage.
Brown throws a right and a left that Rush avoids nicely. Brown smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button. We've been hearing reports that Rush has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Rush chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Rush tries to land a front kick but Brown steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Brown thinks about the counter body kick. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rush throws a shot from downtown. Brown moves away and avoids it. Brown is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own. Brown scores with a jab to the head.
Rush lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Brown tries to keep at a distance but Rush has taken the fight into the clinch. Rush will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Brown up against the cage. Brown prevents a takedown attempt there.
Brown avoids the elbow strike from Rush, against the cage.
Rush is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Brown's coach down at Montreal Fighter's Gym (5* Sparring) was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Brown's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Brown tries to break the clinch but Rush is controlling the position. Brown wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Rush drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kevin Rush. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Brown wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Rush misses with a punch to the body.
Rush will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Brown up against the cage. Rush landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Brown wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Brown is trying to force a seperation but Rush has the dominant position. Rush pushes Brown back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rush has picked Brown up - he's going for a ride! Rush dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard. Rush is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Brown has managed to free his arm - good work. Brown is trying to stand back up but Rush is controlling him
Rush is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Rush wants to take a breather but Brown is having none of it. Rush in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Brown tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Rush!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Kevin Rush! A very excited looking Kevin Rush rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
