PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Huima Kostaja (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Piston Honda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Huima Kostaja!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Piston Honda!
The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Yukihiro Shimada and Yukihiro Yamamoto.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kostaja drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Honda is looking for a triangle but Kostaja pushes his legs off easily.

Kostaja drops back looking for a leg! Honda is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Honda manages to kick Kostaja off! Kostaja jumps back into Honda's guard.
Kostaja trying to control the position from guard on top but Honda is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kostaja sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Kostaja passes Honda's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Honda manages to get to full guard.
Honda is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Kostaja drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Kostaja jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Kostaja is pushing down on Honda's leg trying to pass to half guard. Honda is fighting to maintain full guard but Kostaja has managed to sneak the leg through.
Kostaja prevents Honda from improving his position.

Kostaja is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Honda is trying to stand back up but Kostaja is controlling him

Kostaja is working for a submission of some sort.
Kostaja moves into full mount! Honda won't be happy about that!
Kostaja is breathing heavily.
Honda can't escape the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Honda tries to hold on but Kostaja pushes him away.
Honda is desperately trying to improve his position but Kostaja has a good base and remains in mount.
Honda is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
Honda is in all sorts of trouble here.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Honda has eaten all the pies!

Kostaja with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Kostaja goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Honda is on top in guard.

Kostaja has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Honda can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Honda stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kostaja swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kostaja tries to land a sweep but no joy.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Kostaja had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Honda is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Kostaja Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Honda's back instead.
Honda rolls, trying to escape but Kostaja keeps control of the position.
Honda trying to control the hands but Kostaja won't let him.

Honda preventing the rear naked choke attempt from Kostaja.
Honda really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kostaja. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Honda wants to control his opponent's hands but Kostaja gets his hands free.
Honda tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Honda is desperately trying to improve his position but Kostaja has a good base and remains in mount.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Honda bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Kostaja has his foot on Honda's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Honda works his way back into a safe position though.
Honda in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Honda gets to his feet. Kostaja looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Honda tries a head kick but it misses.
Kostaja looks for a takedown but Honda sprawls well.
No joy there for Honda, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Honda swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Honda misses with the combination.

Kostaja bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Honda tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kostaja wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Huima Kostaja dominated that round.
That's time! Kostaja's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Honda looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Honda misses with an uppercut.

Kostaja forces Honda back against the cage and clinches.

Kostaja wants the takedown. Honda is fighting it off but Kostaja persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Honda's guard against the cage.
Kostaja is pushing down on Honda's leg trying to pass to half guard. Honda is fighting to maintain full guard but Kostaja has managed to sneak the leg through.

Kostaja looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Kostaja is looking to take a break and control but Honda is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Honda makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Honda.
Kostaja trying to control but Honda is working from the bottom.

Kostaja looking to pass the guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Honda looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Honda working for a triangle but Kostaja defends it easily.
Kostaja sitting in guard here, content to control.
Kostaja tries to free his leg and advance position but Honda is retaining full guard.
Honda wants to stand but Kostaja is controlling the position.
Kostaja passes Honda's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Kostaja is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
The fighters are battling for position here. Honda manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Kostaja is pushing down on Honda's leg trying to pass to half guard. Honda is fighting to maintain full guard but Kostaja has managed to sneak the leg through.
Kostaja uses his free foot to push down on Honda's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Honda.
Honda wants to hold on but Kostaja pushes him away.
Honda has given up his back. Will we see Kostaja going for some submissions?
Honda rolls, trying to escape but Kostaja keeps control of the position.
Kostaja has good solid back control here.
Honda breaks Kostaja's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

Kostaja is looking for a triangle but Honda pushes his legs off easily.

Honda gets to his feet. Kostaja looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kostaja changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Honda tries to avoid it but Kostaja manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Honda to the ground. Honda escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Honda misses with a wild combination.
Honda misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Kostaja shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Huima Kostaja overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Kostaja has control of Honda's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Honda regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Kostaja moves to the back.
Honda controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kostaja is cranking Honda's head sideways - that looks painful. He's managed to get his other arm under the chin and this looks bad for Honda! He's tightened the choke and Honda is tapping out!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:04 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Huima Kostaja!
