PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Nate Derks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chosu McGrady (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Derks comes into the arena with The Reckless And The Brave blaring out of the sound system. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Nate Derks!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chosu McGrady!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Paul Gruel and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McGrady tries to bum rush Derks with a series of wild strikes but Derks uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Jab, jab by Derks - just one landing.
McGrady throws a series of punches but Derks moves out of range.
McGrady lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
McGrady throws a right hand that misses

and Derks counters with a nice double leg into side control. McGrady won't be happy with that.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
McGrady is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Derks is controlling him well.
McGrady prevents Derks from moving into mount.
Derks working the body and head with strikes.
The referee asks Derks politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Derks prefers to stall for the moment though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

McGrady is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
We've been hearing that Derks has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
Derks has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
The ground and pound from Derks seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Derks in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.

McGrady tries to buck Derks off but Derks is having none of it.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

McGrady wants to get back to his feet.
Derks in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
McGrady is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

McGrady is looking to reverse the position.
Derks is looking to take a break and control but McGrady is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Derks tries for a kimura but McGrady is defending well.

Derks thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
McGrady gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Derks looking to secure an arm triangle but McGrady defends it well.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Derks cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
The referee warns McGrady that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nate Derks dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Derks looks for a takedown but McGrady sprawls well.
McGrady moves out of range of the strikes.
McGrady throws an overhand right that lands on Derks's shoulder, as Derks tries to avoid the shot.
Derks fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

McGrady drives through with a takedown into Derks's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
McGrady throws a big elbow that misses.
My spies in White's ELITE Fitness Gym inform me that McGrady has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Derks is pulling down on McGrady's head to control his posture.
Derks throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Derks throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Derks is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

McGrady wants to control but Derks is keeping busy.

McGrady pushes Derks off looking to stand but Derks dives back in and keeps control.
Derks winds up and cracks McGrady with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Nate Derks overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Derks not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
McGrady is staying active underneath Derks, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

McGrady looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and Derks pushes past his half guard into mount!

Derks landing strikes from the mount and McGrady is in trouble!

BOOM! Derks connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Derks cracks McGrady with a big head shot that has him covering up instantly! He's rolled onto his side and the referee has seen enough - this one is aaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Nate Derks!
