Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Sampsa Pellervoinen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Monte Ball! The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Vladimir Khabensky and Valeri Chadov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ball looks to score with a jab to the body but Pellervoinen is just out of range. Ball wants to clinch up but Pellervoinen keeps it at a distance. Ball throws a right hand that misses
and Pellervoinen counters with a right hand that sends Ball tumbling to the canvas! Can Pellervoinen finish him? He dives into Ball's guard looking to do just that!
It looks like Monte Ball has been cut. Ball controls Pellervoinen momentarily but Pellervoinen frees himself. Pellervoinen landing with the ground and pound. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ball has momentary wrist control but Pellervoinen slips an elbow through the middle.
Ball is rocked! Ball avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Pellervoinen has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Pellervoinen content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Ball is still in real trouble! Can Pellervoinen finish him? Pellervoinen is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Ball seems to have recovered his senses. Pellervoinen throws a big elbow that misses.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ball looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Pellervoinen controls from within his opponent's guard. Pellervoinen cracks Ball with a solid left hand. Pellervoinen slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Pellervoinen loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Ball is trying to control the position but Pellervoinen postures up. Ball keeping moving, preventing Pellervoinen from controlling successfully. Pellervoinen has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Pellervoinen stands up over Ball, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Ball can do anything to dispel that myth. Pellervoinen lands a couple of digs. Pellervoinen lands a couple of decent looking shots. Pellervoinen works a leg free and moves into half guard. Pellervoinen with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Nice strikes from Pellervoinen there.
That has opened up Monte Ball's cut even more. Pellervoinen trying to pass the guard but Ball defending well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pellervoinen not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Pellervoinen lands a big elbow from half guard. That looks like it's hurt Ball quite badly. Ball pulls Pellervoinen in close trying to recover. Pellervoinen postures up and lands two really hard shots that put Ball on queer street! The ref takes a look and decides to call an end to the fight! Possibly an early stoppage but Ball doesn't seem to be complaining too much.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:33 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Sampsa Pellervoinen!
