Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Rod Bentley! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Mani Pakiau! The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Johanna Lukiainen and Roosa Järviläinen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pakiau digs a good hook to Bentley's body.
Pakiau lands a nice hook to Bentley's body. Bentley takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes. Bentley gets a clinch. Bentley gets a trip takedown into half guard. Pakiau looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Pakiau is looking to improve his position.
Bentley is thwarting Pakiau's attempts to control the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Bentley seems to be working for a kimura but Pakiau defends the submission attempt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pakiau looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Pakiau wants to sweep but Bentley has passed to side control! Bentley tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Bentley has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Pakiau is trying to escape and get back to his feet. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Bentley in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows. Bentley looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Bentley wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Pakiau, who protects the arm well. Bentley has control of an arm but Pakiau manages to advance to Bentley's back!
That's three minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Will Pakiau go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Bentley tries to escape the position.
Bentley really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Bentley is working hard here to advance position. Bentley rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Pakiau wants to take a breather but Bentley is having none of it. Bentley is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Pakiau's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Pakiau's back! Bentley is working for the choke. It looks like he might have got it... has he...? Yes! Pakiau is tapping out! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Rod Bentley!
