PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Marcel Merrill (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ross Ray (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Ray's choice of entrance music: Tsuna Awakens. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Marcel Merrill!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Ross Ray!
The judges for this bout are Andrew Berry, William Gold and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Ray moves into range and clinches up with Merrill.

Ray manages to break the clinch.

and Merrill counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Merrill.
Ray looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Merrill puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Ray uses the cage to get back to his feet.

Merrill gets control of Ray's arms and successfully pulls guard. Merrill will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Ray postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Merrill is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Ray, into his guard.

Merrill seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Ray for as long as he can get away with.

Merrill decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Ray, up you get!

Ray lands a two punch combo.

Ray has closed the distance and engaged Merrill in a clinch.
Merrill tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Ray smiles and moves away.
Ray moves in looking to clinch but Merrill pushes him off.

Ray wants the takedown. Merrill is fighting it off but Ray persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Merrill's guard against the cage.
Marcel Merrill overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Merrill has Ray pulled in close to control his posture.
Merrill has momentary wrist control but Ray slips an elbow through the middle.

Ray cracks Merrill with a solid left hand.
Merrill has control of Ray's left arm, preventing Ray from doing any damage.

Merrill working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ray doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ray manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Ray moves in looking to clinch but Merrill pushes him off.
Merrill drops down looking for a counter takedown but Ray sprawls and moves away.

Ray shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Merrill is looking to control Ray's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Merrill avoid being mounted?

Ray is on the wrong end of a couple of strikes there.
Merrill is pulling down on Ray's head to control his posture.

Ray is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Merrill doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Ray missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Merrill has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Ray manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Merrill on his heels. He'll look to pass Merrill's guard now, I'm sure.
Merrill is trying to keep Ray in close.
Merrill thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Ray wanted to stand there but Merrill had control of the position.
Ray is looking to work some ground and pound but Merrill has wrist control.

Ross Ray showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Merrill will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Ray feints and as Merrill raises his hands in defense, Ray changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Merrill has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Ray is on him like a limpet, forcing Merrill back against the cage.

Ray is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Merrill can't fight it off and eventually Ray manages to take the fight to the floor. Merrill looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Marcel Merrill.
I think Merrill has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
