Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ari Ahikaroa! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Franco! The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Thiago Cunha and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ahikaroa misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Ahikaroa shoots for a takedown but Franco saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Franco throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Ahikaroa tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Franco is in Ahikaroa's guard. Franco is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Franco trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Franco is working Ahikaroa over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Franco pushes down on Ahikaroa's leg and manages to get into half guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Franco is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Ahikaroa! Ahikaroa on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Ahikaroa tries to get out of the position. Franco sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
That's one minute gone in the round. Franco is in the full mount, landing strikes. Franco is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Ahikaroa has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Ahikaroa is trying desperately to improve position. Ahikaroa takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Franco takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Franco stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet. Franco slips a jab and a cross from Ahikaroa.
Franco steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Ahikaroa. Franco scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Ahikaroa is looking to get back to his feet here but Franco is keeping cool and he's managed to take Ahikaroa's back. Franco has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. This has been an exciting period of action! Franco is cranking Ahikaroa's head sideways - that looks painful. He's managed to get his other arm under the chin and this looks bad for Ahikaroa! He's tightened the choke and Ahikaroa is tapping out!
