Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Alex Schafer (ranked 23457 p4p, 694 weight class) and Zach Assad (ranked 25005 p4p, 699 weight class). There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Alex Schafer! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Zach Assad! The judges for this bout are Josh West, Micheangelo Fripello and Jeff Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Schafer feints and as Assad raises his hands in defense, Schafer changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Schafer sitting in guard here, content to control. Schafer trying to control but Assad is working from the bottom. Schafer stands up from guard. Let's bang! Assad will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Schafer will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Assad wants to counter the offense by Schafer and move into the clinch position. Assad tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Assad has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight. Schafer shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Assad defends it nicely.
That's one minute gone in the round. Schafer gets in close and instigates a clinch. Assad misses with a hook from the clinch. Assad throws a head punch that misses. Schafer manages to break the clinch.
Assad misses with a straight right. Assad stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Schafer. Assad tries to close the distance and clinch up but Schafer swats him away and circles back towards the center. Assad moves forwards but Schafer connects with a nice, crisp jab. Schafer rushes Assad and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Schafer keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Assad's efforts to push away. Schafer looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Come on Schafer - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Assad misses with a short punch on the inside. Schafer breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Schafer shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Assad defends it nicely. Schafer gets a double leg takedown into Assad's guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Schafer prevents Assad from getting back to his feet. Schafer passes Assad's left leg - he's now in half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Schafer performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Schafer stands up and beckons Assad to join him on the feet. Schafer shoots in for a double leg but Assad sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alex Schafer. That's going to take a lot out of him. Assad throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Schafer moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body. Assad tries to clinch up. Schafer tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Assad manages to circle out of the way. Assad slips a jab and a cross from Schafer.
Assad tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Schafer paws at him with a jab and circles away. Schafer throws a series of punches but Assad avoids them all with ease. Schafer shoots in looking for a takedown. Assad tries to sprawl out of it but Schafer keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Assad manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Schafer shoots in for a double leg but Assad sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Assad tries to close the distance and clinch up but Schafer swats him away and circles back towards the center. Schafer closes the distance and clinches. Assad is trying to break free. Assad has had enough of the clinch but Schafer keeps him there for the moment. Assad misses with the head strike.
Schafer breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Assad closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so. Schafer avoids the head kick by Assad.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Assad leaves Schafer with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Assad steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Schafer. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Alex Schafer dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

And an attempted straight right on the counter from Assad! But no joy. Assad keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Alex Schafer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Assad looks to land a left hand but Schafer moved out of range nicely. Schafer went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected. Schafer misses with a takedown attempt - Assad sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Schafer shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Assad sprawls well. Assad wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Schafer gets slowly back to his feet. Assad tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Schafer manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. A jab from Assad finds it's way through Schafer's defenses. Schafer is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Assad can do to turn this around? We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Assad throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Schafer showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Assad.
Schafer throws a big counter combination but Assad scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage. Assad looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

and Schafer holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. Schafer pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Schafer throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
A low kick from Schafer is predictable there and Assad counters with a thumping low kick. Schafer throws a right and a left that both miss. And an attempted straight right on the counter from Assad! But no joy. Schafer has Assad up against the cage in a clinch.
Schafer has Assad pressed against the cage, preventing Assad from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Assad throws a punch but it's blocked by Schafer. Schafer breaks from the clinch.
Schafer misses with a leg kick letting Assad counter with a right hand. Assad tries to clinch letting Schafer counter with a right hand.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Assad tries to clinch there but Schafer circles away.
Assad lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Schafer circles away quickly and effectively. Schafer is looking for a counter combo. Assad throws the left hand but Schafer avoids the punch easily. Assad tries to clinch up. A bone on bone clash there as Assad blocks the leg kick.
Assad looks like he wants to counter punch here. Schafer throws a sloppy body shot
enabling Assad to counter with a crisp jab.
Schafer is rocked! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Schafer glances at the clock... BAM! Assad nails him with a big right hand! A momentary lapse in concentration sends Schafer crashing to the mat! The referee steps in and this one is over! Damn, Schafer is out of it, he thinks the ref is his opponent!
