PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Dave Beast (ranked 3894 p4p, 431 weight class) and Ed ONeill (ranked 4968 p4p, 518 weight class). Ed ONeill told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dave Beast!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ed ONeill!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Chris Saunders and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A decent looking cross lands there for ONeill.


It looks like Dave Beast has been cut.
Beast scores with a jab.
Beast blocks a jab.
We've been hearing reports that Beast has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
ONeill connects with a single shot there.
Beast misses with a takedown attempt
and ONeill cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Donk. ONeill catches Beast right on the button with a cross.
Beast fails with a takedown attempt.
Beast on the wrong end of a nice jab.
ONeill lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Beast misses the shot to the body.

ONeill lands a jab.
ONeill scores with a sloppy right hand. Beast should have avoided that one.
ONeill cracks Beast with a good jab.
Beast misses with a body kick.
A little jabbing left from ONeill on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Beast throws a body shot but no joy.
ONeill lands a nice hook to Beast's body. Beast takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
ONeill looks to throw the jab but Beast is out of range.
A slow jab from ONeill misses its intended target.
Beast attempts a counter takedown but ONeill avoids it well and moves away.
ONeill might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.
Beast lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but ONeill circles away quickly and effectively.
ONeill now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
ONeill is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Beast had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté.
A jab lands there for ONeill.

ONeill lands a lovely overhand right.
Beast steps to the side to avoid the strikes from ONeill.
ONeill lands a jab to the head.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Beast throws a series of punches but ONeill avoids them all with ease.
Beast throws a sloppy body shot
and ONeill counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
ONeill throws a right hand that misses

and Beast counters with a shoot takedown. ONeill fights it but they end up in guard.
Beast landing some decent shots from guard.
Beast has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Beast keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of ONeill's head.

ONeill is looking for a triangle but Beast pushes his legs off easily.

ONeill is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Beast is aware though and is defending well.

Beast trying to control the position from guard on top but ONeill is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
ONeill lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Beast keeping moving, preventing ONeill from controlling successfully.

Beast escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. ONeill gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

ONeill trying to control but Beast is working from the bottom.

Beast working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. ONeill doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. ONeill manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
ONeill wants to pass the guard but Beast is keeping the position.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Beast holds on and takes a little breather.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Beast keeping moving, preventing ONeill from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ed ONeill dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Dave Beast's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


The fighters circle momentarily. ONeill darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Beast shoots in for a takedown but ONeill shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
ONeill lands the left hand.
ONeill blocks a jab.
Beast drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
ONeill misses with a hook

and Beast counters with a nice double leg into guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

ONeill had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Beast defends it easily.
Beast distracts ONeill with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
ONeill wants to control the position but Beast says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Beast prevents ONeill from improving his position.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Beast connects with a nice short shot to ONeill's temple.
Beast looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Beast working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Beast scoring with strikes to the body and head.
ONeill wants to get back to his feet.
Beast lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.


ONeill is rocked!
Beast lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
ONeill is still in real trouble! Can Beast finish him?
Beast scores with a big shot! ONeill's head bounced off the canvas with a huge thud! More strikes land and the referee has jumped in to save ONeill! He was hurt real bad - good stoppage!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Dave Beast!
