PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mason Roth (ranked 3704 p4p, 462 weight class) and Sergei Krylov (ranked 5427 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Mason Roth has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mason Roth!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Sergei Krylov!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, John Mangel and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Krylov throws a poor cross that misses
and Roth counters with a nice uppercut.
Krylov connects with a crisp jab.


It looks like Mason Roth has been cut.
Roth comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Roth throws a combination. Krylov tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Roth bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Roth steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Krylov.

Roth has managed to clinch.

Krylov's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Krylov decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Roth on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Roth tries to get out of the position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Krylov is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Krylov is taking a breather. Roth says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Krylov's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Krylov fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Roth to the ground. Krylov is now in Roth's guard.
Krylov is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Roth seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Roth lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Krylov backs up against the cage.

enabling Roth to counter with a crisp jab.

Krylov closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Krylov seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Krylov frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Krylov moves into range and clinches up with Roth.
Roth scores with a nice hook to the head.

Krylov decides to pull guard.
Krylov wants to stand but Roth is controlling the position.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Krylov wants to get back to his feet but Roth is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Krylov is looking for a triangle but Roth pushes his legs off easily.

Krylov wants to stand and escape but Roth is having none of it.

Krylov has his feet on Roth's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Krylov throws a body shot but no joy.
Roth tries to counter with a takedown but Krylov is quick to defend against it.
Krylov feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Roths jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
The fight stays on the outside here - Roth looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Roth tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Krylov looks like he wants to counter punch here.

Krylov has Roth up against the cage in a clinch.
Roth swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Krylov manages to break the clinch.
Krylov has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

The fighters circle momentarily. Roth darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Krylov shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Roth pinned against the cage. Roth gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Krylov takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Roth tries to close the distance and clinch up but Krylov swats him away and circles back towards the center.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Krylov fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Roth manages to avoid it.
Krylov throws the left hand but Roth avoids the punch easily.
Roth misses with a series of wild punches.
Roth scores with a jab. Krylov acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Roth scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Mason Roth is winning the standup battle so far.
Krylov misses with a two punch combination.
Roth looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger.
Krylov cracks Roth with a right hand to the side of the head.

Roth rushes Krylov and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Roth stops a takedown attempt from Krylov.
Roth misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Roth just leaning against Krylov, taking a breather.
Krylov is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Roth gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Mason Roth has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sergei Krylov.

Krylov gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Roth regains guard.

Krylov sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Roth's guard.

Krylov takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Krylov is looking to advance position but Roth won't allow it.

Roth wants to get back to full guard.
Still in half guard, Krylov seems content to control.

Sergei Krylov showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Krylov looks to score with a jab to the body but Roth is just out of range.
Krylov takes a swing at Roth's ribcage but misses.
Roth ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Roth half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Roth swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Krylov has picked Roth up - he's going for a ride! Krylov dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Roth wants to get back to full guard but Krylov has passed into side control.

Krylov is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Roth knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Roth parries the strikes from Krylov easily there. Krylov is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Roth to escape.

Krylov tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Krylov has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Let's hope that Krylov has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Krylov is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Roth's shoulder. That is not cool.

Roth tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Krylov wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Mason Roth has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Krylov takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Roth lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Krylov shoots in but no luck this time.
Roth tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Krylov manages to circle out of the way.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Roth misses with a few strikes there.
A little jabbing left from Krylov on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Roth fails with a takedown attempt.
Sergei Krylov is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Roth is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mason Roth.
I think Krylov has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
