PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dean Malenko (ranked 3567 p4p, 370 weight class) and Will Martin (ranked 4116 p4p, 413 weight class). Malenko comes to the cage accompanied by WCW NITRO ENTRANCE SONG. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Dean Malenko!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Will Martin!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Daniel Bishop and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Malenko darts in looking for a takedown but Martin gets double underhooks and turns Malenko into the cage.
Malenko has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Malenko swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
And Martin tries to counter it with a takedown but Malenko pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Malenko feints and as Martin raises his hands in defense, Malenko changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Malenko stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Martin swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Malenko wants to control from the top but Martin keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Malenko's corner is telling him to maintain position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Malenko is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Malenko slips nicely into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Malenko is working for a kimura but Martin is defending it quite comfortably.
Martin wants to get back to his feet.

Martin is trying to stand.
Martin really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Malenko. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Malenko is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Martin is just riding it out for now. Malenko eventually gives up the hold.
Malenko is trying to control the action in half guard but Martin is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Martin won't allow Malenko to pass to mount.
Martin is staying active underneath Malenko, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Malenko prevents Martin from standing back up.

Malenko is trying to work for a kimura but Martin is defending well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Malenko working the head and body with strikes.

Malenko looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Malenko is controlling the pace.
Martin is staying active underneath Malenko, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Malenko is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Martin is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Malenko moves into full mount! Martin won't be happy about that!
Malenko thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Malenko throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Martin is trying desperately to improve position.

Malenko is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Martin to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Martin shrugs it off.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Malenko is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Martin can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dean Malenko dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Malenko shoots in but no luck this time.
Malenko throws out a loose jab but Martin uses good head movement to avoid it.
Martin tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Malenko leaves Martin with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

and Martin counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Martin.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Martin's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Martin has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Malenko to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Martin is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Malenko pulls down on the head and he's put Martin to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Dean Malenko!
Dean Malenko decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
