PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Son Wukong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alan Wren (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Son Wukong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Alan Wren!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Tarja Halkonen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice takedown defense from Wren. No joy for Wukong on that attempt.
Wren throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Wren connects with a jab.

Wren tries to clinch there but Wukong circles away.
Wren scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Wukong doesn't seem bothered though.
Wukong throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Wukong takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.

Wukong looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Wukong is pressing down on Wren's thigh, looking to free his foot. Wren is holding on for now.
Wukong throwing shots but Wren is blocking nicely.
Wren is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Wukong has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Wukong can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Wren is looking to escape.

Wren is looking to get to half guard.
Wukong avoids the attempt from Wren to control.

Wukong swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Wren is now in Wukong's guard. A big mistake from Wukong there, giving up the dominant position!
Wren wants to control from the top but Wukong keeps moving.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Wren is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Wukong is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Wukong has escaped and now he's on top!

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Wren is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Wukong is looking to control Wren's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Wukong avoid being mounted?
Wukong tries to get to full guard but Wren has control of the leg.
Wukong is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Wren's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Wren's back!

Wukong is not going to allow Wren to sit and survive in this position.
Wukong has the hooks in. Wren is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Wren covers up after taking a massive shot to the side of the head.
Wukong lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Wren hold on?!
Wukong throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch.
Wukong misses with a punch to the head.
Wren tries to escape the position.
Wren trying to control the hands but Wukong won't let him.

Wukong somehow managing to miss with a strike from the back.
Wukong is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Wren up.
Wren looking to stop the rear naked choke attempt by controlling the hands.
Wukong avoiding Wren 's attempts to control his hands.
I really don't envy Wren right now.
Wukong is not going to allow Wren to sit and survive in this position.
Wren breaks Wukong's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Son Wukong dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Wukong attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Wren keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Wren keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Wukong shoots in for a double leg but Wren sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Son Wukong is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A shot to de liver by Wren. Beautiful body shot.
Wren slips a jab and a cross from Wukong.
Wren misses with a low kick as Wukong jumps back.
A combination from Wren does no damage.
Wren throws a series of strikes that have Wukong backpedaling.
Wukong takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.

and Wukong decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Wren's guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Wren is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Wukongis looking to pass into half guard but Wren pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Wren is in guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Wren trying to control but Wukong is working from the bottom.

Wren drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Wukong manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Wren has Wukong in his guard.
Wukong trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Wren has a closed guard, preventing Wukong from standing up.

Wren has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Wukong can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Wukong drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Wren manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Wukong has Wren in his guard.
Wren wants to control from the top but Wukong keeps moving.
Wren working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Wukong's head.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Wren accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wren wants to control from the top but Wukong keeps moving.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Wren stopping the sweep attempt from Wukong.
Wren trying to control but Wukong is working from the bottom.
Wukong is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Wren missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Wukong walks into a stiff left hand from Wren.
Wukong throws a leg kick
and Wren counters with a stiff right hand.
Wren fails with the takedown

and Wukong counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Wukong stops Wren from getting back to his feet.
Wukong thows a big elbow that misses, also allowing Wren to regain full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wren trying to keep a closed guard but Wukong is proving a slippery customer.
Wukong postures up in Wren's guard and throws a big left but Wren blocks it.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Wren is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Wukong pulls his head out easily.
Wukong works his way into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Son Wukong will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Wukong throws an overhand right that lands on Wren's shoulder, as Wren tries to avoid the shot.
Wren misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Wren works over Wukong's head and body with a nice combination.
Wren tries to work over Wukong's front leg with a kick but Wukong checks it.

Wukong closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Wren tries to improve position but can't.

You can see the frustration on Wren's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Wukong advances to full mount.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Wukong raining down shots from the mount!

Wukong tries to control but Wren wriggling away.
Wren sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Wren wants to improve his position but Wukong is controlling well.
Wukong misses with a head shot. Wren uses the momentum to regain guard.
Wukongis looking to pass into half guard but Wren pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Wren is in guard.
Wren won't allow Wukong to sweep him here.
Wukong manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wren is trying desperately to improve position.
Wukong is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Wukong landing strikes from the mount.
Wren is looking to improve his position but Wukong isn't that keen on the idea.
Wukong wants to control but instead Wren manages to regain half guard.

Wren is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Wukong pulls his head out easily.

Wukong throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Wukong has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Wren manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Wren stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Wukong looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Wren tries to clinch but Wukong is having none of it.
Wukong moves forwards but Wren connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Wukong moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Wren ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Wren misses with a takedown attempt

and Wukong decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Wren's guard.
Wren trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Wren throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Wren escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Wukong gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Wukong stands and throws Wren's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Wren manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Son Wukong showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Wukong, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
