The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Philips lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Birchack circles away quickly and effectively.
Birchack with the counter takedown but Philips avoids it easily.

and Birchack counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Philips has hold of Birchack's hands but Birchack slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

It looks like Kile Philips has been cut.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Birchack looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Philips with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Philips knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Birchack on the ground.
