Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Andriy Voronin! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ed ONeill! The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Aafke Stam and Paul Aken.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! ONeill has his takedown stuffed and Voronin counters with a stiff right hand.
It looks like Ed ONeill has been cut. Voronin slaps away a takedown attempt from ONeill, before circling back to the center of the mat. ONeill shoots in for a takedown but Voronin shows good takedown defense. Andriy Voronin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ed ONeill. Voronin connects with a right hand. ONeill shakes it off.
ONeill is rocked! ONeill fails with a takedown attempt from distance. ONeill is still on wobbly legs! Can Voronin finish him? ONeill shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Voronin pinned against the cage. Voronin gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. A little feinted left hand from Voronin on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. ONeill seems to have recovered his senses. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. ONeill shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Voronin sprawls well. Voronin wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. ONeill gets slowly back to his feet. It looked like Voronin wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. ONeill fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Voronin throwing a counter right hand but ONeill manages to avoid it. ONeill shoots in looking for a takedown. Voronin tries to sprawl out of it but ONeill keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Voronin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's one minute gone in the round. ONeill ducks straight into an uppercut from Voronin and tumbles to the canvas! It’s a flash knockdown though - ONeill manages to regain guard straight away.
Voronin has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. ONeill looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Voronin decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on ONeill, up you get! Voronin looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from ONeill. Voronin connects with a stiff jab that staggers ONeill - oh and he follows up with a huge uppercut that knocks him out cold! Man, that was brutal!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Andriy Voronin! Our winner, Andriy Voronin, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
