PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jerry Small (ranked 24823 p4p, 583 weight class) and Manny Quirez (ranked 24841 p4p, 566 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jerry Small!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Manny Quirez!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Bart Greer and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Small looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Quirez is fending him off so far but Small persists. Nope, Quirez circles away and we're back to standing.

Quirez changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Small looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Quirez works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Small is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Quirez's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Quirez should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Quirez has eaten all the pies!

Small is looking for a sweep. Quirez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Small is trying desperately to improve position.

Quirez lands a couple of good shots and Small has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
Quirez misses with a punch to the head.
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



A momentary lapse in concentration from Small enables Quirez to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Small manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Quirez tries to pass the half guard into mount. Small knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Quirez is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Quirez wants to pass the guard but Small is defending well.

Small keeps control of the position for the meantime.

Quirez is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Quirez seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Small does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Quirez scoring well with a low kick there.
Jerry Small seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Small doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Quirez counters with a nice leg kick.
Small shoots and misses
and Quirez counters with a one-two to the body.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Small.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jerry Small. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Quirez has Small up against the cage in a clinch.
Quirez wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Small has him pressed against the cage.

Quirez wants the takedown. Small is fighting it off but Quirez persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Small's guard against the cage.
Small keeping moving, preventing Quirez from controlling successfully.
Quirez is breathing heavily.

Quirez is posturing up here but Small has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Quirez tries to roll out but it's too tight and Quirez has to tap! Slick submission there by Small!
