PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Marcos Martinez (ranked 3741 p4p, 420 weight class) and Braven Harris (ranked 2809 p4p, 336 weight class). Harris has chosen Karma Chameleon as his entrance music. Braven Harris will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Marcos Martinez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Braven Harris!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Harris closes the distance and pushes Martinez back into the cage.

Martinez jumps guard.

Martinez is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Harris trying to control the position from guard on top but Martinez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Martinez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Harris defends it easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Harris trying to control but Martinez is working from the bottom.

Martinez trying to keep a closed guard but Harris is proving a slippery customer.
Harris wants to stand but Martinez has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Harris is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Harris stands up.
Braven Harris seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Harris tries to bum rush Martinez with a series of wild strikes but Martinez uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Harris throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Martinez checks the leg kick nicely there.
Harris looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
We've been hearing reports that Martinez has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Harris lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Martinez circles away quickly and effectively.
Harris closes the distance and lands a one-two.

Harris gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Martinez to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Martinez slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Harris is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Martinez drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Martinez jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Martinez keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Harris's head.
Harris not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Harris wants to sweep but no luck.

Martinez drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Martinez jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Harris looking for a sweep. Not yet Harris, not yet.
Martinez throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Harris works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Harris wants to sweep but no luck.

Martinez trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Martinez wants to control from the top but Harris keeps moving.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Sloppy strikes from Harris. Those never looked like landing.
Martinez wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Harris looks to throw the jab but Martinez is out of range.
Harris displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Martinez.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Martinez circles away from the clinch attempt.
Harris misses with a two punch combination.
Martinez appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Harris tries to close the distance and clinch up but Martinez swats him away and circles back towards the center.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Braven Harris dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Harris throws a right hand that Martinez ducks under and follows up with a left that Martinez also avoids with ease.
Harris throws a lazy right hand but Martinez sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Harris throws a poor cross that misses

and Martinez counters with a nice double leg into side control. Harris won't be happy with that.
You can see the frustration on Harris's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Harris manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Martinez connects with a nice short shot to Harris's temple.
Harris tries to roll over but Martinez keeps him under control.

Harris is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Harris moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Harris keeping moving, preventing Martinez from controlling successfully.

Harris manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Harris thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Martinez's head.
Harris wants to stand up but Martinez has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Martinez is refusing to be controlled, as Harris sits in half guard.

Martinez is controlling Harris's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Harris wants to stand up but Martinez is controlling the position.

Harris trying to control the action but Martinez is working from the bottom.
Harris is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Martinez wants to control but Harris is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Harris frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Harris is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Martinez is trying hard to land a takedown here. Harris sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

and Martinez holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
A head punch on the inside from Harris fails to land.
Harris is pushing Martinez up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Harris trying to stall but Martinez improves his position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Harris breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Martinez takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Braven Harris showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Harris misses with a wild body shot.
Martinez feinted with a counter takedown.
Martinez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Martinez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Harris pinned against the cage. Harris gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Harris swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Harris throws a right and a left that both miss.
Martinez circles away from the clinch attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Martinez takes one to the chin there.
Harris throws a hook to the side of Martinez's head but Martinez sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Martinez dives in for a single leg takedown but Harris sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Harris swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Marcos Martinez. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Harris missing with a left hand there. Martinez was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Harris has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Martinez avoids a punch combination nicely.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Martinez.
Harris will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Harris cracks Martinez with a right hand to the side of the head.
Harris scores with a body shot.
A telegraphed right hand from Harris misses the target.
Martinez defending well as Harris loads up on a big left hand.

Martinez moves into the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Harris swings wildly with an uppercut but Martinez uses good head movement to avoid it.

Martinez breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Harris misses with a two punch combination.
Harris scores with a nice strike.
Martinez's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Harris connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Martinez scrambles back to his feet.


Martinez is rocked!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Martinez tries to get into range but Harris steps to the side and lands a beautiful hook that drops Martinez! He's faceplanted into the mat, ass in the air... he's out cold! That's an image he won't want to show his grandkids when he gets older! Harris scores the big KO victory!
