The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Morris shoots in and drives through. Smits sprawls well. Morris shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Smits but Smits pushes him off and we're back to square one. Morris feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Morris preventing the sweep. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Morris's corner is telling him to maintain position. Morris distracts Smits with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Morris landing with the ground and pound. Morris content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Smits is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Smits wants to stand but Morris is controlling the position. Smits keeping moving, preventing Morris from controlling successfully. Morris looking to sit in guard and control but Smits gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Morris on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Morris tries to get out of the position. Morris trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smits is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Smits has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Morris is proving hard to escape from. Morris is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Morris bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Smits's guard. Morris throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Smits works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Morris is looking to work some ground and pound but Smits has wrist control. Smits has momentary wrist control but Morris slips an elbow through the middle. Smits looking to control.
Smits looking for a guillotine here but Morris defends easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Morris postures up in Smits's guard and throws a big left but Smits blocks it. Morris is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Smits is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Morris controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Smits working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Morris doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Morris manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Smits looks gassed! Morris is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Smits working a defensive guard here.
Smits escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Morris gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Morris wants to control from the top but Smits keeps moving. Morris pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Smits is keeping the position for now. Morris sitting in guard, not really doing much. Morris throws a big right hand that misses.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Morris drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Morris throws a big right hand that misses. Morris postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Morris lands a couple of elbows.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Smits pushes Morris off and scrambles back to his feet.
Morris shoots in but Smits avoids the takedown attempt easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Francisco Morris. That's going to take a lot out of him. Morris looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Smits avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Morris. Morris trying to pass the guard but Smits defending well. Morris drops an elbow to the side of Smits's head. Smits is looking to escape. Smits trying to control from the bottom.
Smits pushes Morris off looking to stand but Morris dives back in and keeps control.

Francisco Morris dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Morris rushes Smits and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Smits breaks the clinch.
Morris shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Smits but Smits pushes him off and we're back to square one. Morris fails with a takedown attempt. Smits shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Morris as he jumps to the side. Morris looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Morris landing with the ground and pound. Morris's corner is telling him to maintain position. Morris passes into half guard. Morris has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Morris scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
That's one minute gone in the round. Morris is nestled in close to Smits, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Morris trying to mount his opponent but Smits defends it. Morris missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Morris is trying to control. Smits wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Smits looking for submissions off his back. Morris is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Smits flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Morris throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Morris shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Morris was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Morris scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Smits?
That's two minutes gone in the round. Morris scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Smits is rocked! Morris pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. Smits is still in real trouble! Can Morris finish him? Morris with good strikes from the mount here! Morris loads up on a couple of big shots to the head that have Smits scrambling to escape. He can't get free though and several more unanswered shots from Morris land to the head. The referee has no choice but to stop the fight. Morris stands and salutes the crowd.
