PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Elgin Turner (ranked 228 p4p, 31 weight class) and Russell Northrop (ranked 280 p4p, 40 weight class). Turner's entrance music is Wu-Tang Clan - Da Mystery Of Chessboxin'. A fine choice. Northrop has chosen Alive And Kicking as his entrance music. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Elgin Turner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 23 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Russell Northrop!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Sam Margolis and Andrew Berry.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Northrop walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Northrop tries to bum rush Turner with a series of wild strikes but Turner uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Turner forces Northrop back against the cage and clinches.
Turner scores with a shot to the side of Northrop's head.
Turner lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Northrop successfully pulls guard.

Northrop is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Turner is aware though and is defending well.
Turner throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Turner has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Northrop escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Turner gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Turner stays in close to Northrop's body and controls the position.
Northrop looking for a sweep. Not yet Northrop, not yet.

Northrop looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Turner passes into half guard.
Turner missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Northrop felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Northrop is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Northrop wants to get back to his feet but Turner drags him back down.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Turner remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Turner is looking to take a break and control but Northrop is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Northrop is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Turner asserts his dominance and retains side control.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Turner is looking to take a break and control but Northrop is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Turner gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Northrop to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Northrop is fighting to break Turner's control of his arms but Turner is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Turner bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Northrop's guard.

Northrop wants to sweep but no luck.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Northrop escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Turner gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Northrop has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Turner can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Turner moves nicely into side control.
Northrop tries to improve position but can't.
Turner is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Northrop's shoulder. That is not cool.
Northrop is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Elgin Turner overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Northrop sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Turner content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Northrop is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Turner pulls his head out easily.

Northrop pushes Turner off and gets back to his feet.
Turner throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Turner throws a nice outside leg kick.

Turner drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Northrop tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Turner wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Turner is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Northrop can do to turn this around?
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Northrop manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Northrop is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Turner is just riding it out for now. Northrop eventually gives up the hold.

Northrop wants to work for an arm triangle but Turner is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Turner has control of Northrop's left arm, preventing Northrop from doing any damage.
Northrop tries to free his leg and advance position but Turner is retaining full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Russell Northrop will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Turner's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Northrop shoots for a takedown but Turner saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Northrop throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Turner misses with a body shot.
Northrop tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Turner scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Turner tries to close the distance and clinch up but Northrop swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Northrop clinches with his opponent.
Northrop throws a punch but it's blocked by Turner.
Turner gets through Northrop's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Northrop drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Turner presses Northrop against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
Turner tries to work over Northrop's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Turner lands with a right to the head.
Turner blocks an uppercut.

Turner works on Northrop's body with a couple of short punches.
Northrop takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Turner blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Turner lands a body punch in the clinch.
Northrop has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Turner blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Turner tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Turner wants the takedown. Northrop is fighting it off but Turner persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Northrop's guard against the cage.

Northrop has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Turner is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Northrop.
Turner is staying tight to Northrop's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Turner continues to stall.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Elgin Turner showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Turner has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

In his post fight interview, Elgin Turner started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
