Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 7 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Don Pelayo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Drotenkov Filippovich! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, David Hoff and Santiago Holmes.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Filippovich misses with a looping left. Filippovich on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere. Filippovich is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Pelayo's half guard. Pelayo trying to hold on to Filippovich's head to control him but Filippovich postures up.
Pelayo is not content to let Filippovich control the position. My spies in Temp Spar Gym inform me that Filippovich has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Pelayo tries to get to full guard but Filippovich has control of the leg. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Pelayo is refusing to be controlled, as Filippovich sits in half guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Pelayo is looking to improve his position.
Filippovich is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Pelayo is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Drotenkov Filippovich! Drotenkov Filippovich was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
