Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Lazaro Shaw! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Rui Gomes! The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, Daniel Bishop and Sam Margolis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gomes throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Shaw tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Gomes is in Shaw's guard. Gomes keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Shaw's head. Gomes sitting in guard, not really doing much. Let's hope that Gomes has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Gomes throws a big right hand that misses. Gomes content to stall in guard here. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. It looks like Gomes might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Gomes drops back, looking for a kneebar! Shaw looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Shaw looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Shaw!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gomes is trying to improve his position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gomes is not content to let Shaw control the position. Shaw in the domination position with Gomes hanging on. Gomes throws Shaw to one side and escapes! Gomes decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Gomes thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Shaw's head. Gomes is controlling the pace.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gomes looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Shaw with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Gomes not doing much here.
Gomes has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Gomes is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Gomes scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Gomes is trying to work for a kimura but Shaw is defending well.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Gomes is figuring out what he wants to do next. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Gomes connects with a nice short shot to Shaw's temple. Gomes takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Shaw is rocked! Gomes scores with a big shot! Shaw's head bounced off the canvas with a huge thud! More strikes land and the referee has jumped in to save Shaw! He was hurt real bad - good stoppage!
