Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, John Baker! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Ingi Hjalmgeirsson! The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Bart Greer and David Hoff.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hjalmgeirsson doesn't succeed with the takedown and Baker counters with a takedown into side control. Hjalmgeirsson tries to buck Baker off but Baker is having none of it. Baker is trying to get an arm triangle but Hjalmgeirsson is defending well. You can see the frustration on Hjalmgeirsson's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Baker working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Hjalmgeirsson is not content to let Baker control the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hjalmgeirsson is trying to improve his position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Baker looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Hjalmgeirsson gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Baker fails to advance to Hjalmgeirsson's back. Hjalmgeirsson has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
Baker is trying to stick to Hjalmgeirsson's back but Hjalmgeirsson is turning into Baker. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Baker's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Hjalmgeirsson. Hjalmgeirsson looking to pass the guard. My spies in Buoy Training inform me that Hjalmgeirsson has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Baker tries to land a sweep but no joy. Baker pulls Hjalmgeirsson in close to prevent any damage. We've been hearing good reports from Baker's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Baker escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hjalmgeirsson gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Baker working a defensive guard here.
Baker has his feet on Hjalmgeirsson's thighs here. He's pushed Hjalmgeirsson off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Hjalmgeirsson screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:42 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). John Baker! A relieved looking John Baker thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
