PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Aasj Qod (ranked 3034 p4p, 271 weight class) and Robbie Hell (ranked 5904 p4p, 424 weight class). Hell has chosen King of kings by Manowar as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Robbie Hell is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Aasj Qod!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Robbie Hell!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Paul Tew and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hell shoots in for a takedown but Qod shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Qod is looking for a counter combo.
Hell tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Qod defends well and Hell ends up having to push Qod into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Qod gets caught napping as Hell dives in and scores a takedown. Qod manages to retain guard.

Qod had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Hell defends it easily.
Hell wants to pass the guard but Qod is keeping the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Qod looking for a sweep. Not yet Qod, not yet.
Hell pushes down on Qod's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Qod looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

Hell controlling the pace.

Hell postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Qod to stand up.
Hell looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Qod is fending him off so far but Hell persists. Nope, Qod circles away and we're back to standing.
Aasj Qod has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Robbie Hell.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Hell clinches.

Qod has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Hell regains guard immediately.
Hell is looking to stand back up but Qod counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Hell.

Hell is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Hell tries to kick Qod off but Qod keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Qod looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Qod stands up out of the half guard.
Qod leaves Hell with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Hell takes the fight into the clinch.
Qod can't break the clinch.
Hell is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Qod pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Hell manages to break the clinch.
Robbie Hell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Qod looking to score a takedown here. Hell is defending well but Qod drives through and ends up in Hell's guard.

Hell pushes Qod off and scrambles back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Hell darts in and clinches Qod up against the cage.
Hell tries for a takedown but Qod manages to get underhooks.
Hell fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Qod stalling.

Qod has Hell pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Qod pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Hell tumbling to the mat - Qod dives into Hell's guard.

Hell has his feet on Qod's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Hell shoots in and bounces Qod off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Robbie Hell dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Hell drives through and clinches with Qod against the cage.
Qod wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Hell has him pressed against the cage.
A frustrated look appears on Qod's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Hell should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Hell controlling the action here for a moment.
Qod gets underhooks to prevent Hell's takedown attempt.
We've been informed that Hell has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Qod's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Qod forces Hell back against the cage and clinches.
Hell has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Hell lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Hell displaying some good clinch control by pressing Qod up against the cage.

Hell manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Qod won't allow Hell to sweep him here.
Qod postures up.
Robbie Hell has got the better of the ground game so far.
Hell trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

Qod drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Hell dives on top into guard.

Hell stopping the sweep attempt from Qod.
Qod controls Hell momentarily but Hell frees himself.

Hell got a little sloppy there for a moment and Qod has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Hell has managed to get both his arms back between Qod's legs - danger averted.
Hell missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Hell engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Qod looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hell is one step ahead there.

Qod is looking for a triangle but Hell pushes his legs off easily.
Hell pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Qod is keeping the position for now.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Hell shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Qod as he avoids it easily.

As Hell looks to move away, Qod throws a big counter combo but Hell just gets out of the way.

Hell misses with a takedown attempt - Qod sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Qod seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.

Hell drives through and clinches with Qod against the cage.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Qod tries to break the clinch but Hell is controlling the position.

Hell is fighting off a takedown attempt but Qod is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Hell to the mat. Hell regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Hell pushes Qod off and scrambles back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Robbie Hell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Qod slaps away a takedown attempt from Hell, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Qod seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Qod moves in looking to clinch but Hell pushes him off.
Hell changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Aasj Qod is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Hell enables Qod to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Hell manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Hell pulls Qod in close to his closed guard and prevents Qod from doing any damage or advancing position.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Hell is on top in guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hell throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Qod works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Qod has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Hell has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Hell breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Hell gets caught flat footed, as Qod shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Hell really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Qod. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Qod throws a strike but Hell rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Qod is trying to keep Hell in close.
Hell throwing strikes but missing.
Hell engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Hell's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Hell avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Hell must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Qod tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Hell sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Qod escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hell gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Hell is stalling in the full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Hell slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

As Hell looks to move away, Qod throws a big counter combo but Hell just gets out of the way.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Aasj Qod.
I think Hell has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
