PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Harry Betner (ranked 5630 p4p, 0 weight class) and Urban Sthal (ranked 5786 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys are coming into the fight with injuries so let's see if that has a bearing on the fight. Harry Betner has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Urban Sthal!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, James Atkins and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Betner tries to keep at a distance but Sthal has taken the fight into the clinch.
Betner is breathing heavily.
Betner is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Sthal gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Sthal digs a right hand underneath Betner's ribcage. Betner let out a lung full of air as it connected.

Sthal gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Sthal wants to take a breather but Betner is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sthal might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Betner haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Sthal throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Betner avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Sthal.
Betner might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Sthal wants to stand up but Betner has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Betner is looking to control Sthal's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Betner avoid being mounted?
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Sthal throws a leg kick but Betner checks it.

Betner tries to sprawl but Sthal drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Betner trying to hold on to Sthal's head to control him but Sthal postures up.
Sthal is trying to control the action in half guard but Betner is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Betner is looking to control Sthal's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Betner avoid being mounted?

Betner is staying active underneath Sthal, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Sthal really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Betner. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Betner is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Sthal pulls his head out easily.
Sthal wants to lay and pray for a moment but Betner keeps working.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Sthal looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

My spies in Cozad MMA London inform me that Sthal has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Sthal lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Betner moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Sthal stands up over Betner, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Sthal is fighting to break Betner's control of his arms but Betner is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Sthal wants to pass the guard but Betner is keeping the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Sthal postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Sthal wants to get up but he can't break Betner's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Betner bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sthal's guard.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sthal wants to improve his position but instead Betner has moved into half guard.
Betner is nestled in close to Sthal, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Urban Sthal dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Sthal scores with a hook to the body. Betner takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.

Sthal changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Betner looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Sthal in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Sthal is looking to take a break and control but Betner is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Betner tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Sthal wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Sthal wants to lay and pray for a moment but Betner keeps working.
Betner gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Betner flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Sthal is looking to chop away at Betner's legs.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Sthal looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

Sthal got a little sloppy there for a moment and Betner has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Sthal has managed to get both his arms back between Betner's legs - danger averted.
Betner is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Sthal pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Betner is keeping the position for now.
Betner has a closed guard, preventing Sthal from standing up.

Betner is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Sthal frees his head nicely. Oh but Betner has switched to an armbar! Sthal is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
