McCarthy grew up in the Irish neighborhood in Boston in a family of criminals. McCarthy wrestled throughout middle and high school. In high school he also started training Muay Thai because he sick of not being allowed to hit people in wrestling. He did not manage to get a scholarship to university because his focus had shifted from wrestling to Muay Thai. With no job and no education, he decided to try is hand at MMA.
