Avinu really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Zappa. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Nate Zappa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Zappa shoots in but Morningstar avoids the takedown attempt easily. Zappa shoots in and drives through. Morningstar sprawls well. Morningstar went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected. Lucifer Morningstar has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nate Zappa.#TD2# Zappa closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Zappa throwing shots but Morningstar is blocking nicely. #SU2# Zappa decides to stand and escape the position. Gavin lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook. Gavin is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Owings shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Gavin dives in for a single leg takedown but Owings sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Owings throws a one two combo.
#CUT2# It looks like Jason Gavin has been cut. Gavin throws a head kick but Owings moves out of range.
Owings lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh. Owings turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick. A looping hook to the body misses from Gavin. Owings does a little dance to reset his feet. Gavin tries to clinch there but Owings circles away.
Gavin throws a push kick but Owings slaps the foot to one side. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Gavin darts in looking for a takedown but Owings gets double underhooks and turns Gavin into the cage. No luck with that takedown attempt from Gavin. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jason Gavin. That's going to take a lot out of him.#T1# Owings paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button. A left and a right from Gavin both land. Nice combination. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. We've been told by Jacobs's head coaches at Cozad MMA Los Angeles that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Franklin working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
