Haarmann versus Stevens WFL-8 Preview

Event Preview: WFL 8- Haarmann vs Stevens
Warrior Fight League
2014-02-12, Helsinki, The Underground - Helsinki
Author:Tony Rossi

Welcome to WFL-8 Haarmann versus Stevens. We have a big title fight at Welterweight and a five round battle at Light Heavyweight. I am not sure if it was miss-scheduled or if it is in fact a title fight, but the champ is going up against what I feel is the number one contender and it is five rounds. There are several other big WFL names in action during this event, so it is a big one folks.

Preliminary Bout Number 1- Featherweight Fight (145lbs)

Sergei Iakov (1-1) {0-1} versus Liubomir "d00mR" Panayotov (0-1) {0-1}

Both of these guys are coming of losing their debut here in WFL. The Featherweight division is one of the strongest here so these guys will need to string together some serious wins if they want to move up in the ranks. One of these guys will have that chance to get something started tonight. Sergei seems to be a little outmatched in this fight, and he should be looking to try and point out Liubomir if he wants the win. Liubomir has the advantage in the stand up, while these two are virtually identical in wrestling so he will want to be aggressive. I think Liubomir wins this fight by knockout in the third round.

Preliminary Bout Number 2- Featherweight Fight (145lbs)

Tim "Phar Lap" Farland (1-2) {0-2} versus Nick Renne (1-1) {1-1}

Farland is a boxer and a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, so rather it’s on the feet or on the ground Tim knows what to do. He should look to box with Renne since he will outclass him in the striking department, and even with the BJJ training he will want to avoid the ground. Nick Renne is a wrestler who likes t ground and pound. He loves to transition to better positions, and if he scores the takedown he will need to do that. Renne should not spend any of his time in Farland’s guard. I would normally pick Farland in this fight, but Renne is coming off the big loss against Lange and I think he will want to rebound from that quickly.

Preliminary Bout Number 3- Featherweight Fight (145lbs)

Ronaldo Hispanyola (6-3) {1-1} versus "Super" Smash Brother (2-0) {1-0}

Hispanyola needs to get this fight to the ground as it will be his only chance. The brown belt looked strong in his last fight but it had been a while since he looked good. He wants to build on that success and get a big submission victory. Brother has a ton of power that he can unleash at a moment’s notice. He is a boxer with plenty of power and he can ground and pound or stand up. I don’t think he wants to go to the ground in this one, but he may not have to. If he can end it early with a big knockout I see him getting better ranked fighter in his next one. I am picking Brother to win by knockout in the first two minutes of the fight.

Preliminary Bout Number 4- Featherweight Fight (145lbs)

Enrico Ciccone (3-0) {0-0} versus Artair Dostan (7-6-1) {0-2}

Enrico is looking to make a big statement in the WFL. He is a great wrestler and a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The twenty five year old has had three fights and he was dominate in all of them. He will look to out wrestle Dostan in this bout. Artair has hit a rough patch in his career with only one win in his last six fights. When he came to WFL I thought to myself this guy is going to turn around his career right before our eyes. I have not seen that yet, so I will be picking Ciccone to win this fight by submission in the first round.

Preliminary Bout Number 5- Heavyweight Fight (265lbs)

Brutus Satanae (1-1) {0-0} versus Syltas Pojk (3-1) {0-0}

In our only Heavyweight fight of the evening both fighters will be making their debut. Satanae is a striker that prefers to work through the clinch. When he was able to gain the clinch he has been very overpowering. In his last fight Skip Swanson took the clinch away from Satanae and we seen what happened as Brutus lost by decision. Pojk is on a three fight winning streak and he has done that by staying at range. If he can keep separation between Satanae and himself he should dominate this fight. One thing is for sure though one of these two is going to get knocked out. My guess is Satanae gets knocked out and Pojk continues his winning streak.

Main Card Bout Number 1- Light Heavyweight Fight (205lbs)

Oskar Wysocki (4-0) {3-0} versus Executive "Screen" Screening (2-0) {1-0}

This is an interesting matchup as Wysocki could end up number one contender if he wins and a few other things go right for him on this card. Oskar is a well-rounded fighter whose strength is in the ground game but he can stand up and fight as well. He will want to go with the stand up in this matchup as I feel he will be able to control the fight. Screening is a wrestler but I don’t think he will want to take Oskar down. Oskar is a better Jiu Jitsu fighter and he should be able to submit Screening from anywhere. This is a very tough fight for Screening I am not sure what he will want to do as far as a game plan in this one. I am going to pick Wysocki to win this fight by knockout in the second round.

Main Card Bout Number 2- Light Heavyweight Fight (205lbs)

Don Schmidt (4-1) {2-1} versus Karol Janosik (3-0) {0-0}

Schmidt is back in action after losing the title fight against Haarmann. Don has a ton of power and laid every opponent out in less than one minute until tasting defeat for his first time. We will see how he responds in this fight, as he will be taking on a big name in Janosilk. If Karol wins and Wysocki losses it could mean a title shot so he is going to want to be on top of his game in this one. Both of these guys are boxers who like to end the fight nice and early, so the question will be who lands the knockout blow first. I will not pick a winner in this one since Don Schmidt is my fighter, but I will pick a knockout in the first round for this fight.

Main Card Bout Number 3- Featherweight Fight (145lbs)

Artie Lange (13-12) {1-1} versus Darren "The Axeman" McGlynn (3-1) {1-1}

Lange is a craft veteran who will want to take McGlynn out of his game. He will be looking for a takedown and then he will want to maintain dominate position to point out a win decision victory over the young buck McGlynn. The Axeman was a knockout specialist until he stepped up the competition level. Since then he has been one and one with both fights going the distance. Obviously the striker will not want to be taken down, and if he can stay up on his feet he will knock out Lange. I think Lange will get a takedown or two, but in the end I see McGlynn getting the knockout late in the second round.

Co Main Event, Main Card Bout Number 4- Welterweight Title Fight (170lbs)

Miguel "The Unstoppable" Augusto (7-3) {2-0} versus Shinya Stanley (4-1) {2-0}

I was surprised to see Stanley get the title shot over Bishop but sometimes that’s the way things go. Augusto was five and three until he got to the WFL and then he revived his career. He has won both of his WFL fights by submission while taking home Of The Night awards in both occasions. Stanley is also two and zero since arriving on the scene in the WFL. Both of Stanley’s fights ended in the first round by TKO. This promises to be an interesting fight as Augusto is a ground fighter and Stanley is a striker. If Augusto gets the fight to the ground he will win by submission quickly but if he fails on a takedown or two Stanley will knock him out. I am going to pick Augusto to win by submission in the first round.

Main Event, Main Card Bout Number 5- Light Heavyweight Fight (205lbs)

Fritz "The Butcher Of Hanover" Haarmann (7-0) {2-0} versus Kevin "Grinder" Stevens (4-0) {3-0}

I hope there is some sort of graphical error since this seems like it will not be for the title but it is a five round fight. Haarmann has been nothing short but amazing winning all seven of his fights by way of submission. The brown belt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter will want to get this fight down to the ground quickly much like he did against Schmidt. Stevens is a great striker who is carrying around an undefeated record. Stevens is most comfortable with ground and pound, which will work to Haarmann’s advantage, so he is going to want to stay away from it. Stevens can strike at range and he also has a deadly clinch so I think he will want to keep his distance and try to hurt Haarmann as much as possible, and then clinch after each stuffed takedown to put on more pressure. I think Haarmann will win this fight by submission but I think it is going at least three rounds if not four.
